When Sugar and Spice Don't Play Nice

When Sugar and Spice Don't Play Nice

A Poem by Pete

Truth is always in harmony with herself, and is not concerned chiefly to reveal the justice that may consist with wrong-doing. - Thoreau

Soothsayers and naysayers.
Wearing down faith with their abrasive prayers.
This is the church, this is the steeple.
Toss a dollar on the floor and watch all the people.
I was born wearing a look of chagrin.
Please open the door and let me in.
Hickory dickory dock.
How much time is left on your clock?
Georgie Porgie pudding and pie.
What do you think happens when you die?
Three blind mice, see how they run.
Couldn't find the cheese, now they're just having fun.
This is Wonderland, say hello to Alice.
She goes around treating everyone with malice.
A-Tisket, A-Tasket.
What happened to your empty basket?
Baa Baa Black Sheep, do you have any wool?
No I don't but my bank account is full.
Jack by nimble, Jack be quick.
How do you light your candlestick?
Jack and Jill went up the hill.
To see the doctor and get a pill.
It's raining, it's pouring.
God is tired and snoring.
Mary had a little lamb.
It left the flock and got into a jam.

I went back to the schoolyard wanting to learn and play.
There were no true colors, only a gazillion shades of gray.
Old MacDonald had a farm.
It wasn't equipped with a smoke alarm.
One, two, buckle my shoe.
I lost my hymnal, now I don't know what to do.
Three, four.
I can't take it anymore.
Pat a cake, pat a cake, baker's man.
I'm just doing the best that I can..
Rain, rain, go away.
Hit me later when I need a spray.
Little Jack Horner sat in a corner.
Now he's on his knees crying like a mourner.
Now I lay me down to sleep.
The pathway to Heaven is pretty steep.
Peter Piper was hit by a sniper.
Went to the hospital with a Candy Striper.
Twinkle, twinkle little star.
Where did you park your expensive car?
Was it near or far?
You may think my words are lazy.
That's not it.
My world is just crazy and hazy.
So dance, dance Thumbelina dance.
This is your last chance.
Remember, everything has a price ...
... when sugar and spice don't play nice ...

WOW! WHAT BRILLIANT SATIRE! I'm so amazed & jealous! I don't write much about how jaded I feel, regarding the current state of our world. I feel there's too much noise on this topic already. That's why I'm especially blown away (in a good way) to find a truly artful expression that is so sarcastic, I think I heard the stinging flesh at the end of every well-crafted line. If I could even THINK up half of this poem, I would be in heaven (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

thanks so very much LauraKate. your shared thoughts are appreciated ... :)
A very creative use of so many nursery rhymes and sayings that we are all familiar with to make your own points. Very readable as it flows with Alice's malice. Loved 'Old MacDonald had a farm.
It wasn't equipped with a smoke alarm.'!

Lol. thanks John ... :)
Very interesting poem Pete, nice use of old nursery rhythms we learnt as a child mixed in with a valid moral point to the tale of this one.
