Even Candles Weep

Even Candles Weep

A Poem by Pete
"

Time is but the stream I go a-fishing in. I drink at it; but while I drink I see the sandy bottom and detect how shallow it is. Its thin current slides away, but eternity remains. - Thoreau

In a dark world.
Bespoken by ancient tears.
A millenium can play out in an instant.
Heaven's wick smolders.
Like a house burned to the ground.
Dead end streets lead nowhere but still must be traveled.
Else they wouldn't exist.
Life's essence drips like morning's sacred mist.
What is loved determines what we keep.
The fuel of faith melts slowly away as an unrelenting night continues it's sleep.
A constant reminder that ...
... even candles weep ...

There is a sadness hovering over this one, a sense of this world being a vale of tears. Heaven's light flickers, but it is like a house burning down, which suggests hope, but little else. The image of the dead end streets that keep being traveled is an interesting one; it makes me think of the definition of insanity being doing the same thing repeatedly while expecting a different result. I also liked the line about what is loved determining what we keep. It explains why some people's dwelling on the negative determines the negativity in their lives. Will have to think a bit more to understand the weeping candle image. Somber work but very nicely done.

I do believe Thoreau would be most proud. Your lines weigh heavy, like snow on cypress trees. Great piece, Pete!

A Thoreau like poem, very nice Pete. I enjoy the buggles too and thatThoreau’s saying on time is just priceless. But back to the poem, such a good read, timeless flow of emotions never reaching the end.
