Today I Saw an Angel

Today I Saw an Angel

Today I saw an angel.
Don't ask me how I knew.
I just knew.
He was wearing white sneakers,
leaning on a cane and shuffling his feet when he walked.
Smiling from the corners of his mouth as he spoke.
His words and mannerisms were kind, gentle and serene.
Not an evil bone in his body.
We exchanged pleasantries,
mostly about the weather.

It couldn't have been an accident.
When we looked at each other, we saw only each others soul.
When we spoke, we spoke only to each others soul.
We addressed each other as 'Buddy'.
There was only goodness and love,
a mutual understanding,
a spiritual connection not of this world.
Nothing else needed to be said.
There was an almost unnatural aura of peace about him.
I could feel it deep down in places we don't talk about.

I saw him all over the city, everywhere I went.
Kept running into him.
Each time we met, it was the same.
We smiled and talked about the weather.
It was all that mattered.
Never any shame.
Sharing a smile.
Each one worth about a thousand words.
Talking about the weather.
We were together.
Looking out for each other.
Nothing else mattered.
That is the way it's supposed to be.
I smiled a thousand words because ...
... today I saw an angel ...

This is a beautiful thought-provoking possibility. I tried on a number of ideas as I read . . . the old guy could be an angel as our deceased loved ones visiting for a bit, or he could be an old stranger along one's path being a living angel of simple friendliness. I love the way this friendship is portrayed as sharing simple conversation . . . to me, this is the crux of being an angel . . . not throwing expectations at every situation, just letting things happen & develop into whatever meaning happens (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Yes, I meet angels too when I walk to town, the pretty way, across the field. Sometimes they talk about their dogs too! But a smile from a stranger can really cheer you up ... change your whole perception of the day! I thought this was a brilliant poem!

'I smiled a thousand words because ... today .. '

That is beautiful - absolutely. A poem-tale that must be true, has to be true because the writer-speaker says so with sincerity and keen description. Talking about the weather, well, that's what life's about for most, the quenching of a human's need for friendship. Angels do exist, their wings wrap around the lonely or needy.. and let me add, the happiest because the latter rubs off onto an angel's the wings, and thus.. will be shared elsewhere!
