A Chapter by pshhkim

I was starting to dose off. But right when I would let my head droop I’d pick it right back up, startling myself every time. I knew I had to stay awake, even though the hosts seemed normal enough, nothing weird about them in any way, but that’s how most of the weirdoes are, sneaky, and masked. In fact the one in the passenger seat was gorgeous!

But once you're a sister, you're always one. And this is just a new chapter in our lives.

They started to talk, I’m guessing that they figured I had fallen asleep like Ashlynne. I know eavesdropping is wrong but I couldn’t help myself, I pretended to be sleeping just incase one looked back at me. While I was listening I noticed that the passengers name was Shane, and the driver was, Austin.

Although they thought we were sleeping they kept their words at a low whisper. At times I could barely make out what they were saying. But I knew that Shane was saying something about Ashlynne. He was sweet on her, I could tell by his eyes. I’ve always been good with that kind of stuff, to me the eyes gave away their thoughts.

“I think I might like this girl”, Shane nodded towards Ashlynne, and that’s when I realized we had never even given them our names.

“but you don’t even know her!”, Austin protested.

“I know, I know, but there’s just something about her, I cant tell what it is yet but there just is” as he said this he stole a glance of Ashlynne as she slept. And at that moment I felt a spark of jealousy, this is something I’ve never felt over Ashlynne before, but I still felt it. I knew I wasn’t going to let it get a hold of me though. I had to be happy for her, especially in the situation were in, that’s what she needed the most.

I felt Ashlynne move under my arm, and I looked over to see her wide-eyed and smiling. I guess Shane, and Austin noticed to, because they stopped talking about her. Shane leaned over his chair and gave her a awkward smile,

“how’d you sleep?”

“eh it was okay, thank you for doing this for us, wed probably be out there all night if you didn’t stop for us.” She gave him a smile in return. He stared at her for a minute

“ Ummm d-do you wanna go get something t-to eat?” ha-ha wow he was stuttering. I decided to give this poor boy a break and step in.

“yea I’m hungry, you hungry Ash?”, she was looking down at her hands witch were twisting her hair around her fingers.

“um… yeah… sure… we can get something to eat… I’m hungry anyways”. They took the next exit, and pulled into the parking lot of Joe’s charred burgers. I could smell the fries and burgers, and I imagined sitting in a little worn down booth, while eating something warm, something whole, the first thing since leaving home..

Austin jumped out from behind the wheel, opened Ashlynnes door and helped her out, she was still tired and tripping over herself. Shane kind of hesitated before getting out, stretching just a bit, and helping me out of the car. I couldn’t decide on if I should leave our bag in the car or bring it with me. Well as of now that bag has our lives in it, so I slung it over my back and brought it. As any other polite boy would Shane ran ahead and quickly opened the door for us. Ashlynne grabbed the closest booth to the door, and we all sat down. Shane got confident and sat down by Ashlynne to put his arm around her. Her frame stiffened, he mumbled an apology as he quickly removed it and shoved his hands into his pockets. She flashed her eyes up at me, and gave Shane a awkward smile before she looked out the window.

The room was nearly empty except for a tiny family in the corner, and a man in line. When I saw the man the hair on my neck went up and I felt like I was punched in the gut, when I took a breathe it was sharp and cold. My hands started to violently shake, the man, the man in the line, was my father.

“A-A-Ash-Ash-Ashlynne..”, I could barely get the words out, I was choking, tears started to pour down in hot streams down my cheeks. At this point all three of them were staring at me with wide panic stricken eyes.

“What Domino? What is it?” Ashlynne repeated, while shaking my hand.

“that man! The man in the line! Its! Its! Its dad…” I finally managed to say, my voice was cracking and shaking beyond belief. Ashlynnes head whipped in the direction of the man, only to relax and look at me with heart broken eyes.

“Domino.. sweetie.. that’s not our dad… you must be tired” Ashlynne said this in a soft well spoken voice.

“what? No it is him! Look at it!” I turned my head again, blinked a couple of times to clear away my tears which were blurring my eyes. Only to find that the man which I thought was my dad, was only a man that looked similar to him. I must be going crazy because it was my dad standing in the line. It was him, it had to be! Why else would I have gotten so freaked? I probably just need some rest, I must be hallucinating.

“are you okay?” Austin asked with concern filling his eyes. Shane had the same look to, so did Ashlynne. They probably thought I was crazy. I realized that the boys didn’t even know our story. They must really think I’m losing it. So I decided to tell them our life story.
