A Poem by Michael Joseph Gatton

Jon's joke is about farting and I laugh.
Not because the joke is funny,
but because I am not capable,
at that moment,
of not laughing.

"Blister in the Sun" plays off tape
and we all scream along,
even at the whispered parts.
This, and The Goonies,
are all that hold my generation together.

Those, and one of the Weezer color albums.
And each of us wrestles with
obscurity and the lack of a compelling protagonist
in our own way.

I over-eat and smoke myself slowly to death.

Sometimes my junk doesn't work.
Usually it's with younger girls
and they think it's their fault,
and I let them because, really,
that's fine by me.

My grandfather was once
stationed at Roswell.
I never met him,
and I like to think he landed there.

That someday soon,
it will become apparent to you
that I am, in fact, the alien
I've always thought I am.
That I look like you and talk like you,
but I am not
like you.

But soon,
I will buy a suit
and do things other 26 year olds
do in suits.
Drink, mostly, I imagine.
And wrestle with obscurity
and the lack of a compelling protagonist
in their own way.

I do not wear a suit.

This was brilliantly done. A look at that space between so to speak. I found it a thrilling read. Kudos.
