To the beholder

To the beholder

A Poem by prema

                        To the Beholder

    Don't look at me anymore
    If otherwise you'll only see
    The taint of my innocence
Left behind by this coercive life.

For you alone, I assume roles
    To seek inherent reality
But can only perceive the apparent
For the truth is  behind a veil.

    Don't look at me anymore
You can only see the veil
The stains and ink on it
Inflicted by others and afflicted by fate.

What your eyes desire to see
Is lost in me, my purity
Now for your sake I seek
    What is behind the veil.

Pain and resentment loom heavily over this one. There is the feeling the speaker has been disappointed before, and seems to be warning another to tread lightly, though I feel there is a willingness to trust there, too. It takes courage to do so if one has been burned before.
