MysteryA Poem by Jasmine Smith
Oh, How Great Thou Art
How Great Thou Art
For no word in the human language can describe
Your magnificence
Indescribable, no one can comprehend
Yet my spirit yearns to know you
To understand you
Omnipresent, fills the world and fits inside of me
Transcendent yet immanent
Cannot be objectified or held within our grasp
Not only hears but listens to the cries of his creations
Moves the hearts of human beings
Holding inside the power to do the possible for
Therefore genuinely possible
Yet not doing what is possible
Therefore completely impossible
The only true and living God
Spirit, infinite, eternal, unchangeable
Wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness
Truth
And yet these cannot describe
Owing us nothing yet
Giving us everything
He is a mystery that encounters us
Beyond our knowing
Holding the universe in his hands
Securing me in his heart
Who is he?
Father, lover
Redeemer, deliverer
First and the last
Beginning and the end
King of Ages
King of Heaven
King of Glory
King of Kings
The Way, the Truth, the Life
Name above all names
Spirit of knowledge and understanding
Kadosh, Abhir
Yahweh, Elohim
Adonai, El Elyon
El Shaddai
Author of life, Creator
Comforter, counselor
Jehovah
And yet I cannot describe
The Almighty One
Loving the unlovable
Finding the lost
Giving hope to the hopeless
Healing the dying
Knowing the number of cells in my body to stars in the sky
Creator of every beautiful flaw
For we cannot see your face
Yet we see you everywhere
In that bird sailing smoothly through the air
In the astounding sun that rises and sets so beautifully
In that innocent laugh of a baby
To that desperate heart that lies within a woman
Everything that is good and perfect is he
Never too much
Reveal yourself to us
