The Human Race
As the human population rises exponentially, so too does the use of our planet’s resources. Earth’s resources are finite. If we accept these premises, our conclusion is that the human race is going to die out. I suppose this shouldn't be a surprise, because everything dies, but we are doing next to nothing to curb our population explosion or our use of resources and this will surely lead to extinction. The only concession I have about this conclusion is that it is possible for science to develop more exponentially than our population and give humans the ability to live on other planets, giving us a possible endless supply of resources. I’m not certain how plausible this is due to the need for inconceivable and drastic scientific discoveries in a short period of time.
Basically, either science advances to unprecedented levels, giving humans the ability to become self-sufficient, or our race will die out eventually. The former solution would require cooperation, luck, efficient government, seamless communication, and many other perfected systems to rely on. My view is that this is not likely to happen but I have but little ethos to offer. It scares me to no end to not know when or if the human population will run out of resources. Could it be in your children’s lifetime? Probably not but in 20 generations? It doesn't matter. When humans become extinct, all our accomplishments, possessions, and thoughts will be for naught.
There are so many unanswerable questions. That’s the bottom line. Right now the pessimistic answers look the most plausible. This seems to be the consensus of society in general as well. Even many religions hold the belief that life is suffering. Much philosophy holds the core belief that the “human condition” is one of anguish. With so much of society starting with the assumption that life is suffering, optimism seems ignorant.
