CheatA Poem by popouriiFor my dad.Feeling the share of everyone, Will you drag it through this world? Here you are, late again, Now we’re ready to pray. “Dear God, thank you for the food…” Is how it always starts and how it ends, “Wait dad, you forgot to tell Him about…” Ha, I never had the nerve. The food is cold, I don’t like peas, Swallow what I can’t have inside of me, I know the routine, I’m always the first to leave, With a stinging remark lurking behind me. You, with your almighty hand of arrogance, Slam it down, watch the table shake, Slam it down, feed your gluttonous, lusty appetite, Overjoyed to rev up the fear in everyone. I can hear it following me down the hall, Family portraits looming over me, Just echoing to meet me in my only place of privacy, Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang! I don’t have to be around to know what you’re saying, Complain about work, the house, the life you lead, “My son the burden, my daughter the fuckup, My oldest is dead and the rest has gone to s**t.” You laugh, you think you’re clever, I’m laughing too, don’t you know? Now shut up and lie in the bed you’ve made, As you shall sow, so shall reap, And fall asleep next to what you’ll never keep, Because lies are cheap, your love is cheap. © 2013 popouriiFeatured Review
