Unexpected Chapter 39A Chapter by Julie Beth:(
I now know the meaning of seeing my life flash before my eyes.
After my dad stabbed me, I saw every good thing that has ever happened to me.
It was like I was watching a movie, ever perfect memory playing on the screen.
I remember everything perfectly, as if it was just yesterday.
Although I was in a hazy fog of nothingness, I could hear Carson
when he found me. I could tell he was crying. I wanted to reach out and hug
him, tell him not to worry; everything was going to be okay. For some reason, I
couldn't do anything. It was like I was paralyzed. Fear washed over me, was I
going to die?
I couldn't die, I was too young. Dennis need's his mom, his life
is already messed up. I can't let my dad take him. I heard a thud as something
hit the floor. Then I heard heavy footstep run into the room.
"You son of a b***h." A male voice said, was that
John? The real John? I would have to apologize for not being able to tell him
apart from my dad, that is if I live. My dad laughed. I heard a gunshot ring
out, I was so weak, and I couldn't even cringe.
Please, oh please, tell me that Carson and John were okay. That
Dennis was safe and Carson would take care of him if anything happened to me.
"Carson?" John's strong voice said too loudly. I
waited to hear Carson respond, nothing came of it. Please tell me he wasn't
shot, not Carson. I wanted to cry out, scream at the top of my lungs, but I
couldn't. For some reason, I felt peaceful. I couldn't feel the pain as it
subsided. There was a small light that kept growing bigger and bigger by the
second. Small voices at the back of my head urged me to go into the light. Is
this really my end?
Xavier pulled up to Maddy's house just as Maddy's dad was being
shoved in a police car. His arm had blood gushing from it. Was he shot? Half of
the neighborhood was out in Maddy's from yard watching from a distance. Xavier
took a deep breath and stepped out of the car, just as the paramedics rushed
out of the house, with Maddy strapped down to a gurney.
She was unconscious and had a blanket over her stomach. It
didn't matter though; you could tell Maddy was bleeding because blood was
seeping through the blanket. The paramedics rushed her into the ambulance
shouting out commands at each other. Where was Carson? Why didn't he go in the
ambulance with Maddy?
Xavier pushed past everybody and ran into the house. He was
stopped in the living room by a police officer.
"What are you doing here son?" The police officer
asked. Xavier didn't know what to say. He was clueless; he just wanted his best
friends back. Before he could come up with an answer, Maddy's mother spoke up.
"He's okay." She said to the officer. He looked at her
sternly, and then nodded.
"Thanks Ms. Chase." Xavier said in the most sincere
voice. She nodded her head in response; Xavier could tell she was really out of
it.
"Carson's in Maddy's room. I think you really need to go up
there." She told him holding back a sob as she walked out of the house.
Xavier took a deep breath and walked up to Maddy's room. It wasn't the same as
it usually was, she wasn't here. Carson was sitting on the floor, his back up
against Maddy's bed. He was shirtless and in a pair of grey sweat pants. Xavier
also noticed that his hands were covered in blood...Maddy's blood. Carson's
face was withdrawn, and his eyes were red and puffy from crying.
Carson was holding Dennis in his arms. Dennis was looking around
trying to figure out what was going on. Maddy
had to pull through, Xavier thought. She would never leave Dennis, or Carson. Not
after everything that's happened.
"Carson?" Xavier said crouching down to Carson's eye
level. Carson was looking at something; Xavier turned his head in that
direction and saw a picture of Carson and Maddy before she got pregnant. They
were happy, laughing.
"Her heart stopped." Carson said quietly not taking
his eyes off the picture. Xavier felt like a fifty pound weight dropped in his
stomach. "They almost couldn't restart it." Carson continued as tears
started to well up in his eyes. Xavier has never seen Carson cry. Seeing Carson
break down like this, Xavier had no idea what to do. How could he tell Carson
that everything was going to be okay when he didn't know?
"Carson, give me Dennis. I don't think you should be
holding him right now." Xavier said as he slowly extended his arms, but
Carson's grip on Dennis only got tighter.
"I should have been the one to get stabbed." Carson
shook his head, trying to hold back the tears the best he could, but he
couldn't.
"Carson, don't do this man, this wasn't your fault."
Xavier told him gently trying to take Dennis away from Carson. Xavier knew that
Carson wasn't going to give up Dennis, but he had to try. Carson is the type of
person to forget he's holding things when he's upset. Even though Xavier knew
that Carson would never
hurt Dennis, he just wanted to be safe.
Carson looked up at Xavier with pleading eye. He didn't want him
to take Dennis away from him; it was the only thing he had left that was close
to Maddy. He didn't have to say anything because he knew Xavier understood.
Xavier hesitated for a minute trying to make his decision, then backed away
letting Carson hold Dennis.
"She got up at six in the morning. Do you know what the
last thing I said to her was?" Carson asked Xavier. Xavier shook his head
as Carson continued. "Shut up, I’m trying to sleep. I didn't wake up until
she screamed, and by that time it was too late. I should have woke up and gone
down stairs with her, fight back. Instead I got f*****g knocked out, and now
Maddy might die and Dennis..." Carson looked down at little Dennis who had
fallen asleep in his arms. Dennis needs a mom...not just any mom; he need's his
real mom. "If it wasn't for John, he would probably have Dennis. John was
smart about this and called 911, John had Maddy's mom watch Hannah and Dennis
to make sure they were okay. John shot Mark in the arm to stop him."
Carson shook his head trying to get the memory of seeing Maddy out of his head.
"Carson," Xavier broke through Carson's thoughts.
"Give me Dennis; I’ll get him a new set of clothes. Go take a shower and
get dressed, I’ll take you to the hospital." Carson's blood was all over
Dennis's clothes, poor guy has no idea what's going on. Carson was hesitant. He
didn't want to let go of Dennis, but he wanted to go see Maddy so badly.
Carson sighed and reluctantly handed over Dennis, grabbed a
t-shirt, and a crappy pair of jeans, then went to go shower. He paused at the
doorway and pointed to the changing table.
"Dennis's clothes are in the right draw below the changing
table, and his diapers are in the left draw below the changing table."
Carson paused for a minute, and then left the room.
Xavier gently put Dennis down on the changing table trying not
to wake him up, but Xavier has never changed Dennis before, so he made no
promises. He took out a diaper and then something that looked like footie pajamas;
it had happy dinosaurs all over it. Xavier shrugged, he was sleeping anyways,
and it was a bit chilly outside.
By the time Xavier had taken off all of Dennis's clothes, Dennis
was squirming and wailing. Now he understood why he would never change Dennis
before, he knew he was doing everything wrong. He needed Maddy back, Dennis
needed Maddy back.
Carson finally turned on the shower; Xavier could hear it
because it was right across the hall. By this time Xavier couldn't hold it in
any longer. He started to cry, sob, as he got Dennis dressed. Then he took
Dennis and bounced him in his arms. Xavier couldn't live without Maddy... he
didn't want to live without Maddy.
Carson walked out to the car with Dennis in his arms. He quickly
buckled Dennis in making sure he was safe before shutting the door and heading
over to the driver’s side, but Xavier blocked him.
"Give me the keys." He said to Carson as he held out
his hand. Carson looked up at Xavier confused, why couldn't he just drive.
"Look, Carson, you're in no shape to drive, you'll probably
speed or something. Just this once, let me drive." Xavier told him. Carson
didn't fight, he just want to go. He handed Xavier the keys and then climbed in
the back seat with Dennis.
The ride to the hospital was the longest ride in Carson’s whole
life. He just wanted to see Maddy, tell her he was sorry for being such an a*s,
and tell her how much he loved her. When they got to the hospital, Carson
unbuckled Dennis and took him inside as Xavier parked the car.
Carson rushed up to the room where Maddy was and looked in the
window. A tear rolled down his face.
Why her? Carson thought
My name is Maddy Chase; I am a victim of rape, stalking, and
neglect. I have a son, he is four weeks old, and his name is Dennis. Although
he was born under the worst conditions possible, he is one of the best things
that have ever happened to me. The other best thing is Carson. He is my fiancé,
and I love him more than anything,
except Dennis of course. There's one other guy in my life, his name
is Xavier. He's my best friend in the whole world. I can tell him anything.
These three guys are the reason I’m holding on. The reason I’m not giving up.
Without them, I would be nothing. That's why I refused to go into the light...
