Unexpected Chapter 33

Unexpected Chapter 33

A Chapter by Julie Beth

When I woke up, Carson was gone, and my mom was sitting in the chair next to my bed. She was flipping through a house magazine. I scanned the room and I saw Hannah on the floor playing with her dolls, but Dennis was nowhere in sight.

"Mom?" My mom looked up at me, so did Hannah. A huge smile flashed across her face. She got up and ran towards me.

"Hey Maddy." My mom said putting the magazine aside.

"Mom, where's Dennis?" I asked freaking out. He should be in the room.

"Who?" My mom asked really confused. I sighed and rolled my eyes.

"My baby mom! Where the hell is my baby?" I demanded. The look on my mom's face went from confused to shocked. Probably because I was never this crazy.

"Honey calm down." My mom rubbed my back. "The nurse took him to go make sure he didn't get hurt in the accident." I looked over at the clock; it was around eight at night.

"The crash was over twelve hours ago! Why the hell are they doing this now?" I demanded. What the hell was wrong with these freaking doctors?

"They did, but they are just double checking. Sometimes you don't see any injures until hours after the accident." My mom explained in her calm soothing voice. I on the other hand was still freaking out. I had tears welling up in my eyes.

"Does this mean something's wrong with him?" Oh my god, this can't be happening. If something’s wrong with him... oh god.

"Maddy, sweetheart, you need to calm down. This isn't good for you right now. You are just more alert than most women are because you are a first time mom and a teenager. You need to take a second and breathe. The nurse said he should be fine, they're just checking to be safe." I took a deep breath and nodded my head. Mom was right, I was over reacting, but I couldn't help it.

I looked up and saw Hannah crawling up on the bed. The next thing I knew, Hannah jumped in my lap and sent a sharp pain through my stomach. I gasped in pain, and squeezed my eyes shut trying to stop the tears from coming out. "Hannah," My mom shouted at her. "Don't do that! Maddy's hurt." I opened my eyes and saw Hannah back away and her eyes started to water.

"Mom, why did you have to yell at her, she didn't know." Then I turned to Hannah. "Sweetheart, it's okay, I just need some time to recover." I said quickly. Hannah had a tear run down her cheek. I knew how she felt, when I was yelled at when I was five; I thought it was the end of the world. I would feel horrible and cry. I scooted over and patted the left side of my bed. Hannah crawled over and sat next to me. The room was silent; I knew Hannah wasn't going to talk. She is always like this after mom yells at her, she goes into silent mode. My mom decided to break the silence.

"How are you feeling sweetie?"

"Honestly, stressed beyond belief." I replied as I put my head in my hands, then sighed and dropped them. "How long ago did they take him?" I gave up on trying not to over react.

"Honestly, the second they walked out with him, you woke up." My mom said with a small smile on her face. I rolled my eyes, leave it to my new motherly instants. "He's really cute. Did you name him?" I smiled and nodded my head.

"Dennis Matthew Chase." I said with a smile on my face. My mom titled her head to the side.

"Dennis as in my father?"

"Yeah. He was the one who really convinced me to keep the baby. On top of that, I could always go to him when I had a problem. I miss him so much; he deserves to have his great grandson named after him." I looked over at my mom, her eyes were watery and she leaned down to kiss my forehead.

"I always knew you were raised right." I laughed, of course it hurt my stomach, but it was worth it. Was that suppose to be a complement?

"Um, thank you I think... Mom, do you know if Jasmine is here, or if Xavier is awake?" I asked knowing what I had to do.

"Yeah, Xavier's awake, and I think Carson might be down there. I know he wanted to see Xavier before he left."

"I need to talk to you; do you think you could take Hannah to go see him so you and I can talk?" My mom nodded her head and took Hannah down the hall to go see Xavier. I could tell that Hannah was tired so she should be a handful for Xavier, I’ll make it up to him later. After five minutes, my mom came back into the room and took a seat next to me.

"What’s going on?" My mom asked she could tell this was more than just a talk.

"After the funeral, I found Hannah in the field playing with flower. Dad was sitting next to her and I went to go and get her away from him." My mom's eyes went wide and I could tell she was taking this the wrong way. "He didn't touch her or anything." I quickly reassured her. "But he did say he would fight for custody of Dennis. Mom I don't give a s**t that he's the father, I don't want him anywhere Dennis or me. I want him gone mom." I told her getting worked up again.

My mom sighed and ran her hands through her hair. I could tell she was frustrated just like me. "I know you said you wanted a restraining order, but Maddy, he can go to jail. This is a crime. We can either get a restraining order, and risk him breaking it, it can happen Maddy, and you know it will, or we can go to court and try to get him in jail." I know I should say jail, but it's my dad. I just can't do this now.

"Mom, I really need like a week to get myself back together. Just give me a week to think it over and then I’ll give you an answer."

My mom was about to say something, when the nurse came in with Dennis in her arms. I smiled then looked at the nurse.

"Is he okay?" I demanded as she rested him in my arms. I looked down at him; his eyes were staring back at me. "Hi." I said softly in my baby voice.

"He's great, not damage done, but...” the nurse trailed off. My head snapped up

"But what? You said he was great, no damage done." I had to remind myself to actually breath. The nurse laughed lightly.

"But, he's hungry." She finished. I glanced around awkwardly

"Oh..." The nurse and my mom laughed at my response. My mom rubbed my back.

"Don't worry, you'll be fine. She'll show you how to breast feed." My mom said smiling.

"Can you please not call it that?" I said to my mom she looked at me with her are-you-serious look. "I'm a teenage, I get grossed out, just say he's hungry." My mom rolled her eyes.

"You need to grow up." my mom said.

"No I need to not be grossed out." I responded as the nurse took Dennis. For once, I was happy Carson wasn't here.

Three days later, Carson was helping Xavier and I in the new rental car. According to the car guy, our car was unfixable because it was mangled so bad. While Xavier and I were in the hospital, Carson, Xavier's parents, and my mom, decided it would be best to buy a new car, which Xavier's parents and my mom were buying. Carson offered to help pay, but the adults just told him to put away his money.

Xavier sat in the front, and I sat in the backseat with Dennis. Thankfully, Carson got him a car seat because the hospital wasn't going to let us leave without one. Dennis was so cute in his car seat with his little race car one piece on. I seriously wanted to curl up and squeeze him like he was a teddy bear. The car ride was short, and quiet. We were all to exhausted to talk to each other.

When we got home, Carson helped Xavier out of the car and into his room, and then came back to help me with Dennis. The doctor said I should be on bed rest for about a week and Xavier around two weeks. He really needed to heal up I guess.

Carson got Dennis out of the car seat, and then helped me out of the car. My stomach still killed, I didn't think it would hurt this bad for this long. Not to mention, the meds they give you at home are not even as good as the ones they give you in the hospital.

"Where is Dennis sleeping?" I asked. There wasn't much room in the condo, it only had two bedrooms. Carson shrugged.

"I guess in our room." Carson replied stifling a yawn as he opened the door to the condo. I walked in and the place was actually clean, like sparkling.

"Uh, Carson, I think someone robbed us of our messy condo." I said looking around. Carson chuckled,

"Yeah, thank my mom for that. She came in here and made the place all clean and set up Dennis's stuff. We just have to figure out where she set it up." I rolled my eyes I love Carson's mom, she was so nice and always put others before herself.

We walked into Carson's room and saw all of Dennis's stuff was set up in the corner. He had a crib, stuffed animals, bottles, five bags of diapers, and clothes, lots and lots of clothes. "Carson," I groaned. "I told you not to buy everything for him. I told you I would pay." Carson let out a tired sigh as he went to go put Dennis down in the crib.

"That was actually the work of your mom and my mom, take it up with them." Carson replied stripping out of his clothes and into his boxers, hopping into bed. He patted the spot next to him,

"Come on, you know you want to go to sleep." Carson said with pleading eyes.

"You know you seriously have a problem if you're afraid to sleep alone." I retorted. Carson rolled his eyes.

"No, I’m tired and I was thinking that you are too because you have bags under your eyes. Plus, you should enjoy sleeping while you can. No telling when Dennis will wake up." Carson persuaded me. I rolled my eyes and crawled into bed with him. He wrapped him arm around me belly.

"Sorry about the gross belly fat, I’ll get rid of it fast." I yawned. Carson sighed and shook his head.

"Why are you girls always worried about how you look?"

"You're not a girl unless if you freak out about how you look at some point in your life." I replied and then drifted off to sleep before Carson answered.

It felt like I was asleep for two minutes, maybe even seconds, before Dennis started crying. I groaned as I rolled out of bed and picked him up from his crib. I sighed and took him out into the kitchen so he wouldn't wake up Carson, I don't think Carson has slept since the accident.

Balancing Dennis in one hand, I rubbed my eyes with the other. Then I looked down at Dennis who was still freaking out.

"Okay, Dennis." I yawned, "What is your problem?" I wish he could answer me and make it so much easier on me, but he couldn't talk. I sighed and then realized he needed to be changed.

I carried him back into Carson's room and got a diaper, then walked down the hall into the bathroom. Thankfully, my prayers were answered. In the bathroom, up against the wall was a small changing table. I quickly changed Dennis, hoping he would stop crying, but he didn't. If anything, it got worse.

"Oh why can you just be a good baby like you were in the hospital?" I was saying it more to myself than him. I sighed and redressed him, then carried him into the kitchen. I looked down at Dennis, his face was red and he was still crying. I felt so bad, I wanted to help him, but I didn't know what he wanted. "Do you want some formula Dennis?" He looked up at me at the sound of his name. His crying quieted down; it was now more like a whimper. "I'm going to take that as a yes." I said smiling to myself. I heated up the formula in the microwave so it was warm. Then I put the bottle to Dennis's mouth.

Most babies would drink it. I guess Dennis decided not to be like most babies; instead he started crying...no not cry, more like wailing. He squirmed in my arms. It was like he thought I was trying to kill him.

"Oh my freaking...ugh!" I slammed the bottle down on the counter and then gently placed him down on the counter so he was lying down. "Alright Dennis, you leave me no choice." When Hannah was a baby and started to have a fit, my mom, the baby whisperer she is, always knew how to calm her down. I just hope this works for Dennis.

I put the plug in the sink and turned on the faucet. I made sure the water wasn't too hot or cold. Then, I started to undress Dennis, until he was wearing absolute nothing. But this point in time, Dennis was full out screaming as I turned off the faucet. I picked him up to put him in the sink, when Carson came in the room.

"Maddy, what the hell are you doing?" Carson yelling. I looked up at him.

"I'm making him stop crying." I said as I placed Dennis in the water and held the back of his head for support. Carson came running up behind me.

"Maddy, he can drown." Carson said really nervous. I could tell that because I could hear him. I could hear him because Dennis wasn't crying anymore. His eyes went big as he stared at the water. I sighed in relief, he looked so cute.

"This is how you give a baby a bath Carson. As you can see, I have one hand holding up his head, and the other is on his back making sure he doesn't fall. I'm not drowning him." I told him as Carson looked in amazement.

"How did you know that would make him stop crying?" Carson asked not looking away from Dennis.

"I remember when Hannah was a baby, she would be screaming twenty four seven, but when mom put her in the water, she would stop. I wanted Dennis to stop crying so I put him in water." I explained as Dennis moved his arms in the water. His eyes grew widened as he watched ripples go across the water. It was so cute, I had to laugh. "Do you like that?" I said in my baby voice. Dennis looked up at me with his eyes, he was so cute. I kept Dennis in the water for a few more minutes before taking him out, I was too tired to give him a bath, and I didn’t want to accidently slip and have him get hurt because I wasn't supporting him. Carson stayed in the kitchen with me while Dennis was in the sink.

"Carson, could you go get a towel?" I asked. Carson nodded his head and went to go get a towel. I was glad Carson was here, I'm to paranoid to get a towel with Dennis in my arms, he was so fragile. Carson came back with a fluffy black towel. I drained the sink, which was so cute because Dennis's eyes went so wide and his mouth opened up in a perfect "o" I thought it was so cute. I took one hand off him and moved the faucet head, so it would hi Dennis, and then I wrapped the towel around him and picked him up. Thankfully, he didn't cry.

"Oh thank god, we're making progress." I said to myself and Carson laughed. He was sitting on a chair at the table watching me. "You can go back to bed you know, I know you're tired and I’m hoping he'll go back to sleep after I give him a bottle." Carson shook his head.

"I'm good, I’ll wait for you." Carson said as he watched me dress Dennis. "Do you want me to do anything?" Carson asked trying to be helpful. I looked at him, he was really tired. "You could go to bed because you look like you're going to drop dead any second and you have to go to school tomorrow or today actually." I said looking at the clock, it was already midnight.

"Yeah, but you're supposed to be on bed rest for a week." Carson nagged in response. I sighed as I lifted Dennis into my arms and gently started to bounce him.

"No, the doctor said about a week, I was on bed rest for three and a half days. That's about a week so." I scrunched up my face at him in response. I looked down and saw Dennis was trying to touch my face. "Beside's bed rest is for wimps or the seriously injured, like Xavier." I rolled my eyes as I continued to bounce him.

"Are you ready to drink your formula now?" I asked him. "You're going to be a good boy for mommy right? Good boy's drink their formula without screaming." Dennis kept looking at me as I grabbed the formula and said down in the chair next to Carson. Thank god, Dennis was a good boy and drank his formula, actually he fell asleep drinking his formula.

"We need to get him a bib." Carson said in a low voice once Dennis fell asleep.

"Sleep now, bib later." I responded as we walked into Carson's room and put Dennis back down. Then silently begged that he would sleep through the night.

Carson was already in bed as I crawled in next to him, He grabbed my waist and rolled my on top of him. Then he kissed me deeply causing our tongues to collide.

"You know," I breathed in between kisses. "Between you and Dennis, I’m not going to get any sleep." Carson laughed against my lips and pressed me against him.

"That's the plan." I rolled my eyes and kissed him again.
