CONNECT WITH YOUR GRANDCHILDREN: LESSON #9A Story by Mike KeenanCONNECT WITH YOUR GRANDCHILDREN: LESSON #9
Hi William,
On this day in history: 1981 Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical "Cats" (based on poetry by T. S. Eliot) directed by Trevor Nunn first premieres in the West End, London. Watch - This is one of the songs sung by an aged cat near death. She laments her loss and it ties in nicely with Billy Collins’ poem about “Forgetfulness.” - Memory (Reprise) | Cats the Musical: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gd_ohoPzYc 4.31

Read - ‘Amazing Grace’
This may be one of the most beloved hymns/spiritual songs of the past two centuries. The soaring words and melody, describing profound religious joy, strike a chord around the world, and ‘Amazing Grace’ is estimated to have appeared on more than 11,000 albums, including one featuring a version by Ray Charles with the London Symphony Orchestra. There are also terrific versions by Elvis Presley, Diana Ross and Willie Nelson.
William please note - this was written by a British ship captain who used to deliver slaves to America!
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see. ’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed. Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come; ’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. The Lord has promised good to me, His Word my hope secures; He will my Shield and Portion be, As long as life endures. Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail, And mortal life shall cease, I shall possess, within the veil, A life of joy and peace. The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, The sun forbear to shine; But God, who called me here below, Will be forever mine. When we’ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise Than when we’d first begun.
How do you think he feels about his former job as a slave ship captain?
I think he felt remorse. Do you know what an eulogy is? If not, look it up.
Now watch President Obama, the first African-American to become president of the USA, quite an accomplishment for a black man in the USA. His fellow Afro-Americans must have been very proud. Human rights and the black Afro-Americans are in constant tension in the USA. The news is full of stories of two white guys who shot a black man who was jogging on the street. Incredible eh in 2020!

Neat eh! We will finish here. We got off to a sluggish start but finished with a strong kick like a marathon sprinter seeing the finish line. Do you like the simile? See you tomorrow.
