CONNECT WITH YOUR GRANDCHILDREN – GRANDPA MIKE’S FEEDBACK AFTER LESSON ONEA Story by Mike KeenanCONNECT WITH YOUR GRANDCHILDREN - GRANDPA MIKE’S FEEDBACK AFTER LESSON ONE It was great working
with you for an entire hour yesterday. I have always admired your writing and
imagination. Good writing requires much effort like a soccer player who practices long and hard every day to perfect his shooting, dribbling, passing and defending. (Notice the simile.) Good writing requires constant practice. And you can readily observe when someone has worked hard just like you might notice teammates who exhibit extra effort so that in a game, they look polished, and it appears that they are performing with little effort, yet we all know that stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have put in hundreds of hours of practice to perfect their skills. I hope that you might take inspiration from them and are willing to exert some effort. My last season of college football, many of us knew that we would be drafted by pro teams so we started “the extra mile club.” After long, tough practices, we ran four laps around the track before heading in, changing and hitting the showers. That extra effort was worth it. It helped us do well at pro camps. End of GM’s pep talk! During Grandpa Mike’s Lesson 2, there was this exchange: William: Should I work harder? GM: William, Here is the thing, It's probably the most important thing that you will ever learn. Really & truly. I kid you not. You will learn that external sources - me, your parents, your teachers, your coaches, etc. can never tell you how hard to work. Only you can figure that out. YOU have to become the decider on when you have worked hard enough. NOBODY ELSE really matters. Your mom learned that in grade four from a very good teacher in Port Colborne named Brian Louey. (Hope I spelled his name right.) End of pep talk #2
