ROBERT STRANGE MCNAMARA

ROBERT STRANGE MCNAMARA

A Poem by Mike Keenan

ROBERT STRANGE MCNAMARA

Dazzling at Ford’s think tank, he mass-produced

tsunamis - cascading like Niagara Falls;

a clear mind inside the mist,

pure logic surfaced like a log.

He wowed the press with charts

and graphs and toothy Irish grins,

defoliated jungles, slaughtered

everything that crawled.

He charmed troops, shook each hand,

and at the Bank, restructured debt,

aid parceled with the stamp

of a clever man.

In Fog of War, marvel at the stoic face

that blandly outlines death,

counts the charred civilians

before they dropped two bombs.

Commerce has many champions

and pretenders to the throne,

but if you value callousness

it’s the Harvard prof you’d clone.

Oh I remember him so well. He looked for forgiveness in the end. There was none.
