ABSENTEES

ABSENTEES

A Poem by Mike Keenan

ABSENTEES

To kill time, students steal hours

in brief escapes with pill and pelvis

yet, like sand that filters

through

an upturned glass,

they return,

a thirsty

chorus

of tiny aspirations

like a moan upon the cross.

I meet them every day,

and wonder who teaches what

to whom.
