ACTS OF GOD & MENA Poem by Mike Keenan
ACTS OF GOD & MEN
Supine, bloated bodies float on toxic waste while rapists seek solace in Superdome’s dim alleys, looters target firemen in New Orleans, where revelers celebrate Mardi Gras to Dixieland’s Saints marching in.
Prized red state submerged as voters cling to roofs while Céline sings on Larry King Live, bravely wipes away her tears - we sense a turning point.
Sean Penn arrives with a boat; we are born again, Bush after the Ohio re-count, and when levees break and needy perish in paltry numbers, he commiserates from the distance of his ranch -
Oprah descends with a film crew to monitor her pain. Anchormen and news teams divvy up the turf. W. waves from Air Force One; recalls twin towers ablaze while reading to children. God does test his faith.
Another September blessing: six weeks of pain, then cast away the mighty stone as he takes his place amidst the great, even honest Abe; but history books will get it right; deride his silly quotes.
His first address from the Oval Office: visage grave, voice soft, reassuring, he calms the fearful multitude, pledges practiced hope, sanctions a full day of mourning with prayers to the Lord.
The Dow holds; speculators invest in Home Depot; the NFL starts right on schedule.
