Mysterious eyes

Mysterious eyes

A Chapter by Property of Kent

Sonya

I walked back to the shop, holding my sketchbook under my arm. I had just

left the shed and already I wanted to go back. Especially when I seen

Meredith prancing towards me. “Sonya!”, she shouted. I rolled my eyes, ready

to face my nagging sister. “What do you want,  Meredith? Did you break a nail

or something?”. “You are such a spoiled brat!”, Meredith shouted. “That’s

funny, I don’t see a mirror around here”. “Oh you are in for it now! Get over

the attention you are getting from Justin, right now!”, Meredith started.

“Woah, woah, I don’t even like Justin. Is it my fault that he won’t leave me

alone lately?”. Meredith grabbed me by the shoulders and shook me

violently. “You are endangering my social life!”, she screamed. Suddenly a

figure emerged from the shadows and both of us gasped, but for different

reasons. Meredith because of the hooded stranger with half his face scarred,

me  because there, in the pale light of the full moon, stood my biggest secret.

Handsome and emotionless. “Is there a problem here ladies?”, Darius asked.

“N-no no problems at all just some sisterly bonding is all”, Meredith stuttered.

“It’s very dangerous out here this late at night, perhaps you should go home.”

“Y-yeah we were just on our way. Come on Sonya”, Meredith stuttered,

pulling on my arm. I just stared up at the handsome mystery before me .

“C’mon!”, Meredith screamed pulling me away.  I tried not to look back as we

retreated for the shop. “Are you crazy that kid could have killed us! Did you

see those scars? People like that don’t play games!”, Meredith lectured. Once

we got to the shop, Meredith ran to the phone. “I’m calling the police!”, she

said. “Meredith you don’t know anything, what if he was trying to help us?”, I

pleaded. “I’ll take my chances.”, She said pressing one of the buttons.

“Meredith, why can’t we forget everything we seen and just get some sleep.”

I didn’t expect it to work, but sure enough, Meredith hung up the phone.

“You’re right”, she said, “I’m sure we’ll forget all this in the morning”. This was

not Meredith, or at least, she could not control her own words or actions. This

was the work of a vampire, but I wasn’t exactly sure who, and that was

enough to send chills down my  spine. I  laid on my bed, dwelling on

everything I had seen tonight. Meredith was lucky. She was granted the

promise of forgetfulness by something, someone, beyond her control . I went

to my room, hoping for at least a bit of sleep. I suddenly felt an uneasy

feeling. I looked over to see a pair of eyes from my window. I would have

known if it was Darius. Wouldn’t I ? These eyes were an icy blue , not like

Darius’s. I finally convinced myself out of worry and paranoia and fell into a

memory haunted sleep.

****************************************************

You’ll do great my little ballerina angel. my mother said after kissing my head.

A ten year old Sonya gleamed happily back at her. C’mon, or we’ll be late for

curtain call! Meredith said, pulling me away as if our mother had been

invisible. I blew one final kiss to my mother, who caught it in her hand. Soon

after, I was left waiting backstage with the strong scent of hairspray and

perfume. The cheesy smiles on the faces of the other girls as glitter rained

from their dresses while they warmed up. I took one final look at myself in

one of the mirrors. my raven black hair in two tiny buns with yellow lace tied

around them. I wore a little yellow fairy dress and little yellow slippers to

match. I had one line, which I repeated over and over again to myself. Rain is

just liquid sunshine, rain is just liquid sunshine.

I woke early, only to be greeted by the paranoia that someone was watching

me, but I looked around and found nobody there . I flipped on my lamp that I

had cut to reveal  little moons and stars on the ceiling, where the portrait of

my mother now hung. I missed her, more than anything. My mother was the

one person in the whole world that seemed to understand me . I felt lost

without her, and things were getting worse. My father struggled to pay bills

and mourned in his small office while Meredith spent her days exercising her

polished pink fingernails texting away and giving me hell. I found myself

longing for the nights when I ran into Darius. I felt a strange sense of home,

around perfect strangers. Now there was a new mystery. The blue eyes I had

seen. Had I really seen them? Had it all been part of a dream? I decided to

distract myself by drawing the eyes I had seen. After all, sleep was futile with

haunting memories almost certain.  I walked to  desk my and took out my

colored pencils. Once I was finished, I noticed something almost hypnotic

about the eyes. It was almost beautiful, but left an uneasy feeling in the pit of

my stomach. Soon after, I heard the water turn on in the bathroom, followed

by Meredith’s off pitch singing. I rolled her eyes both for my sister’s lack of

musical ability and the day ahead. I threw on some blue jeans and my The

Crow t-shirt. “Can’t I just help in the shop today dad?” I asked, as I walked

down the back stairs past his office. “Sorry Sonya, but you’re not missing

school unless you’re sick. Why do you want to miss school anyway? Is

something wrong?”. “What? No! I’m just really tired, I stayed up drawing all

night.” “Well, you do look exhausted. Tell you what? You can miss just for

today, but you have to make up the work you miss immediately.”, He said.

“Deal!”, I exclaimed, embracing him. “Now go get some sleep”. I nodded and

retreated to my  room, bumping into Meredith on the way. “Watch where

you’re going!”, Meredith shouted. I ignored her and returned to the solitude

of my room. I looked to my bed. It would be nice to get more than an hour of

sleep, but I didn’t want the memories to follow. Every minute dreaming of my

mother was paradise, but it was exactly that, a dream. Every time I wake I

always feel more and more alone.  I plopped myself on the bed, looking up at

the portrait of my mother. “I miss you”, I whispered, my eyes filling with

warm, salty tears. I felt tears stream gently down my face until I begin to drift

off and give into sleep.
