IntroductionsA Chapter by Property of Kenta chapter by katie. enjoy!Sonya
I laid in bed, looking up at my collage of drawings pinned in various spots around the room. Right now, I focused on a picture of my mother that hung on the ceiling. The world has seemed so empty without her. It hurt thinking about her, but it was the only way to keep from worrying about what had happened just few nights ago. What would mom have done? I could only guess. It was futile. I had been thinking non-stop about the boy no matter what I did. “Sleep”, I murmured to myself, “I need sleep”. I convinced herself as I laid down.

“Sonya come on, mommy is gonna push us on the swings”, Meredith called out as she ran towards the swing set on the nearby playground. I looked down at my small, filthy hands and wiped them on the ground as I stood. I found myself running after my sister, until I fell and scrapped my knee. I burst in tears of course, what six year old wouldn’t. Not long after, my mother came running and swooped me up in her arms. I quieted down a bit as I laid my tiny head on my mother’s shoulder. Her brown hair tickling my nose. It smelled like strawberries, sweet, sweet strawberries.

I woke with tears in my eyes. I wiped them away with frustration. I hated tears, and there had been a lot of them lately. As I sat up, I thought of my sketchbook. “Damn it!”, I exclaimed, remembering my sketchbook was in my bag that I had dropped by the shed that night. I looked to her clock. It was 3:30 in the morning, way too early to be awake, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t sleep. Thoughts of the boy took over. It had become all I could think of. “I’m not afraid of you”. I mulled over this phrase, the first one out of my mouth. It was true, I was not afraid. What was to fear? Death? That didn’t seem like such a punishment, in fact, lately I wished for it. Wished for my mother appear with outstretched arms, to embrace me. Every dreary day is a constant reminder of how alone I am in the world, but I couldn’t let any harm come to the people who did matter. I couldn’t stand to see my father, and even Meredith hurt, and I promised myself that I would do anything to keep them out of harm’s way. “It’s what mom would do”, I assured myself, before I drifted off into a blissfully dreamless sleep.
A few hours later, I forced myself out of bed . Meredith had already gone by now, and didn’t bother to wake me. “Thanks sis”, I mumbled to myself, but it wasn’t surprising. I knew that my sister was embarrassed by me. Lately, I didn’t even care anymore. There was a time I wanted to be noticed and have friends, but I was well beyond those years. This was how I lived now. Invisible? I wished. Instead I walked down the halls, taking in all of the murmurs about me.“How can she possibly be related to Meredith”, one girl chuckled. I ignored them. Today however, was significantly different. The murmurs were now tauntings and some even threats. I didn’t understand why, until I seen Justin. He couldn’t take his eyes off of me. This, was really weird. “It won’t last”, I assured myself, but throughout the day, Justin got braver. Towards the end of the day, he grabbed my hand. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?”, I questioned angrily as she turned to face him. A group of people nearby gasped. “Trying to get some digits”, he gleamed. “No way!”, I said as I turned to walk away. “Wait”, he called, running in front of me. “Look, I don’t know what’s wrong with you today. If you had a fight with your bitchy little girlfriend and want to prove something or if you just got punched in the head real hard in football practice. I don’t care honestly, just stop following me around like a lost puppy!”, I shouted. This made the crowd that gathered go crazy, so much so that I debated on taking a sarcastic bow. I quickly decided against it, especially since Brittney and her Barbie doll minions weren’t there to witness so I started my walk to the shop. I entered t he shop and pulled my uniform on as I told my dad about what happened. “Well I don’t see why you’re surprised baby girl, you’re beautiful”, my father said. “Yes dad, I know”. “I have a few things to get done”, he said. “Wahoo, no more fortune cookie lectures”, I joked. “Not yet”, he corrected. I couldn’t help but shake my head and smile at him as I went off to do her tasks for the day. Meredith entered the shop just seconds after, grabbing me from the back of my shoulders. I jumped back. “You scared me!”. “Like I care!” Meredith snapped. “Whoa someone forgot to put on her nice girl panties today”, I replied. “You think you’re cute don’t you? Getting brave, all because Justin likes you. You better watch out or else Britney will make your life a living hell”, Meredith explained. Girl drama was always her best subject. “How could my life possibly be a living hell with a sister like you?”, I asked sarcastically. Meredith snarled and pranced away. “Don’t trip”, I called after her. I could hear my sister muttering under her breath, but it just made me chuckle more. I couldn’t believe that there was ever a time I had been intimidated by these girls. After all, dirt and mud was like their kryptonite. I brushed the thought from my mind as I went to take some crushed boxes to the dumpster. It was near dark and I couldn’t help but to wonder if he had been watching for me. In the blink of an eye, he appeared in front of me. “What do you want?”, I asked, in a somewhat annoyed tone. “We never got the chance to formally introduce ourselves. I looked towards the shed hesitantly and began to follow him. “Name’s Darius by the way”, he said. “Sonya”, I replied. Once we reached the shed, he invited me in as one or two of them looked to me but not the way I expected. They looked almost, afraid. “Guys, this is Sonya, she is our ally. An older man stood from his seat to come shake my hand. He said something, that I assumed was hello in Russian. “Huh?”, I found myself saying as I took his hand. “My apologies, I use my own language whenever I can. My name is Vicktor”, the man said in his thick Russian accent. “Nice to meet you”, I replied. Darius pulled me aside, my sketchbook in hand. “You are very good at drawing.”, he said. “Thanks”, I replied. “I have a question about the woman”, he said. “What woman?”, I asked. Darius took the sketchbook flipping to the page that my mother was drawn on. Darius reached in his pocket, pulling out the photographs that captured the memories of my most recent dream . “That’s my mother”, I sighed, as I took the photographs. “She’s very pretty”, he said. “Yeah, she was”, I replied, my eyes falling to the pictures. “She died?”, he asked. I nodded. “The store got robbed just a few months ago, she was the only one there.” “I’m sorry for your loss”, Darius said. “It’s alright, it was just a wrong place wrong time thing.”. Darius nodded and looked over to Vicktor. “I have to go take care of some things”, make our guest feel at home. Vicktor nodded knowingly and I couldn’t help but wonder if I was missing something, or if I even wanted to know. I was about to leave when Vicktor motioned for me to sit. I didn’t want to be rude, and really wasn’t in a hurry to get back to the shop to be taunted by Meredith. I would take a group of blood sucking vampires any day over my cold blooded sister. “He really isn’t trying to be rude.”, Vicktor said, breaking the silence. “No worries”, I replied. Vicktor sighed as he sat down once again. “It’s quite hard being the leader sometimes”, he said. “How long have you been their leader?”, I asked. “Me?”, he chuckled. “I may be the eldest but I am no leader. That position belongs to Darius”. “I had no idea,” I said in surprise. “His age is greatly deceiving, but he’s very mature I assure you. He is the one who saved us.”, Vicktor explained. “Saved you from what?”, I asked. “Demons, they exterminated most and enslaved the rest of us, it is only because of people like young Darius that we are safe now.” I had so many questions. What was Darius? What made him stronger than the rest of them? I never got the chance. Darius came back and looked to me. “Your dad will probably start to worry if you don’t get back soon”. I nodded and headed for the door. “Goodnight”, he said before I left. “Goodnight”, I replied.
