The Dial Turner

The Dial Turner

A Poem by Emily Dickinson Jr.
"

I based this poem off the Milgram experiment.

"

Screaming in a room

People see and regret

And turn the dial up

Staring at dilated eyes

Wide and wet

More and more is ordered firm

They conform

And continue until the body

Ceases to squirm

Eyes wide open

And body quite still

Tells the turner

" Thanks for helping science

You boring, pitiless,pitiful, conformer."

This makes me think of Milgram's famous experiments, but this is way way darker. It's macabre and gruesome but its really that last line that makes it hit home, and when all horror above is suddenly given a moral meaning, it hits you like a ton of bricks.
btw, you missed an "r" in Staring on the fourth line

Milgram experiments revealed that around 9 out of 10 ordinary people are easily able to justify violence. Your poem had me thinking, and thanks to that I read more and learned more. The last line is good. It sums up what we people are these days. We need to open our eyes. Thanks for sharing, Emily. Keep writing.

Its funny. Eighty percent of people surveyed prior and apart from this study said they wouldnt go past the initial small shocks administerd in the milgrim experiments. Then in the end close to all of the people, with a little push from the proctor, went all the way, despite the confederate faking death! Hilarious. The last line, the quote kind of struck me as harsh. I meant genetically, socially, cultually, demographically, we all conform to some level. The experiment was initally engineered to explain the motions of the people of germany during the nazi occupation and regime. Milgram wanted to prove that certain people were more subject to conformity than others, and in the end we found out that well all conform, more than we realize. Interesting though.

okay i am impressed. to take the Milgram Experiment and turn it into a poem alone is amazing but a "political view on society" is just flat out awesome. brilliant!
