Can we skip the Christmas?

Can we skip the Christmas?

A Poem by Emily Dickinson Jr.

Christmas is a time of good cheer

Kindness, and family; fairytale bliss

For me it's a day like Halloween should be

My loved ones turn into monsters: Misery

I’m eaten up inside by their weapons

These weapons lay not in clawed hands

But come out through pouty lips

How can a Christmas to you, be a dream?

But to me a nightmare

Why the bitterness I feel?

That unlike Santa is much too real

When I hear the stereotype

I would do anything to reach the stereotype

Reality isn't gentle like that

A tree doesn’t make love

And gifts don't mean a thing

They’re bought with cash

Cold, hard, unfeeling money

I want this holiday to skip to any other

I'd even take a pitiful Easter Bunny

A Rotten Pumpkin

Over this farce that gives to Thee

A rotten me

Over this holiday that freezes my tears

Over this tree that shudders

With their yells and screams

All their blames of me

Instead of he nor she

They’ll never see

 The truth of the day

They're blind to their madness

Completely ignorant, and fraudulent

In their fake cheer

That they have themselves to blame

So I'll sleep in Hollie covered covers

Always the same

I'll wake to my brightly wrapped doom

And dream of a day

Where I can skip this red and green room

I sincerely hope there comes a time when you regret writing this, because that will mean you've reconciled and exercised your demons...we can't pick our family *laugh* Maybe instead of thinking of it as a miserable time of year for you, you could do something selfless, and donate your time to a soup kitchen or visit the elderly who have no family...there are so many wonderful things you could and should make this season about...and who knows, perhaps your charity might even make you feel better. Be well.

I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way. Not everyone enjoys the holidays and I'm sorry it's so bad for you. You really got your emotions out in a very creative way and I like seeing christmas in a different light. The imagery is powerful! I enjoyed this.

Ahhh. this little poem has to be one of those guilty little pleasures none of us want to admit we love but secretively partake with great pleasure. those of us from dysfunctional families can really relate... going in to the gathering we can define the role playing part that will be played by each member. One of my sisters and I used to joke about putting in an appearance at a command performance... I love the way you describe this holiday and this ending:

I'll wake to my brightly wrapped doom
And dream of a day
Where I can skip this red and green room

I LOVE it! My wife and I started our own traditions because we came from families that turned holidays into torture sessions to the point that we just needed a clean break... so we would dive up the coast of Maine along the ocean and cook our meal on the exhaust manifold of the car as we drove... what a blast, each holiday we would take the highway up to the last place we left off and then continue up the coast... I suggest ... Make your own new tradition for the holidays that cause the most pain... and let the chips fall where they may!

very high marks from me on this one... well done

Ha. You go girl!
This is a complete denial of your responsibility for your own happiness. As a poem it ha merit, power, emotion and pathos. As a reality it sucks!

I agree. I work retail as a Manager. Holidays bring rude people and too many hours. I wish for days where family could relax and have long talks and know laughter. Thank you for the excellent poem. I like your thoughts.

Lots of people all over the world share a Christmas such as you describe. This is the time of year when both the worst and the best of humanity is seen and shared. For some reason true bliss draws out real pain - not something one wishes to share this holiday season - but reality. The Christmas card version plays out when you share this holiday with children.
