A Story by Clarisse Nanoit
"

Just something I thought of...

"

Dustin sighed, rubbing his forehead with his hand. "Tracey, I don’t want to argue about this anymore. I deserve to keep it. I’ll use it."

"I’ll use it, too. Don’t make me add this to the list, because I will." Tracey had a list of things she wanted for divorce court proceedings such as these. Dustin was increasingly frustrated with the growing list. This latest thing was quickly bumped to the top of the list. "Besides, you’ll lose. It’s mine, Dustin."

"It was ours. You gave it to me; we shared it. No reason to be so selfish."

"We can’t both have it!" The two-year marriage was the worst thing that Tracey had ever endured. She was more than thankful that they’d never had any children, though it might have made this situation easier in some ways. This thing they were arguing over was about the only thing the couple had ever agreed on.

"Of course we can. It’s not like we’d need some kind of custody plan or weekend visits. It’s a perfect idea that we share it!"

"You’re just saying that because you know they’re going to be on my side about this," she exclaimed, motioning towards the lawyers in the room. Dustin began nervously tapping his hands on the arm of the leather chair he was sitting in.

It was true. Dustin was desperate. No matter what, he couldn’t lose this battle. "Don’t be ridiculous, Trace. You’re being really selfish… like you always were."

Before Tracey could begin a rant about all of Dustin’s flaws, Tracey’s lawyer, a man who once aspired to become a psychologist, a man who said many things about his own character with his habitual silence, spoke up. "I have a suggestion," he interjected.

"What’s that?" Tracey asked, not expecting what he was about to say.

"Neither of you get it. Both of you forfeit it. It isn’t really that important, right?"

Dustin and Tracey took long, hard looks at each other. They were skeptical and uneasy, but at about the same time, they agreed, realizing that they could each use the name "Lennon" for their first children, as long as they pretended they weren’t planning on it. How would the other ever know?

interesting thing to argue over. I liked itm you could feel the tension, hear each person's thoughts equally. But, i think you should add a little bit more description... as to where they are, what they're doing, who they're with, why they hate each other...you know just keep going with it. It was a great Idea.
