Are You Sure?

Are You Sure?

A Poem by Clarisse Nanoit
"

just a thought...

"

Please, keep it; I can't take it back.

I finger the 24 karat, would-be engagement ring

that sits on a chain around my neck,

a constant and torturous reminder.

I can't take it back.

The night I foolishly refused your lovely proposal,

you said those words to me,

and I accepted the ring, not quite sure

what in the world to do with it.

I can't take it back.

That night was so confusing,

so right, so wrong,

so everything I've ever wanted.

I can't take it back.

Now, three years later, you've moved on,

and I'm still here, as scared as ever.

If I could revisit that night, figure out what I was thinking,

change my asinine response from a two-letter word

to that three-letter one,

I would.

Please, keep it; I can't take it back.

If I could change your mind right now,

call you up, tell you I made a  mistake all those days ago,

I would.

If I could make it to where I'd never uttered the word "no" at all,

I would.

I would do anything, but

I can't take it back.

Wow, how sad and revealing. I love the repetition of "I can't take it back" and how it brings all together in the conclusion. Beautiful and exposing, I could feel the pain and regret without having ever been in a situation like that. Thanks for sharing this!
