AnymoreA Story by Clarisse NanoitThis is something I wrote a little while back. It's not great, but it was just an idea I was contemplating...Barry's phone rang at 11:00 p.m. Who the hell could that be? He already knew. "Hello?" Luckily, he hadn't already been in bed.
"Hey, Bar."
"Kristen?! It's 11!"
"I know, but I need you."
"What is it, beautiful?" She was beautiful.
"I heard a noise. I know it's probably nothing, but I need you to convince me."
"Christ, Kris." His voice held deep disappointment.
"I know, I know. I can't help it, though. Scared me."
"You said yourself, though, that you knew it was nothing."
"Yeah, but I also said that I need to be convinced."
"Well, then, you know that house is old. Old houses come with creepy noises built in."
"You're right," she said, feeling better. There was a long silence, then Kristen got the subconscious reason she'd called. "You know, me and my dad had a horrible fight today."
"Again?" Kristen and her father had never gotten along.
"Yeah." She was extremely depressed, and Barry could sense so. "I mean, he's just so..."
"Irrational?" He'd heard her use the term in reference to her own father a billion times before.
"Yeah," she said, breaking down. Kristen was trying her dangdest not to cry, but her lips quivered as she uttered her reply.
"Go ahead," Barry said.
"What do you mean?" Kristen choked back her sobs.
"Cry. It's ok."
"I don't waaant tooooo," she whaled, accidentally releasing her tears.
Barry had to hold the phone away so not to be deafended. After a few moments, he said, "You ok, Kris?"
"Yeah," she said, recovering. "Thanks. That's all I really needed, I think."
"Kristen, we can't keep doing this."
"What?"
"I'm not your boyfriend anymore."
"I know that," she replied, still not understanding.
"You can't keep calling me when you have problems."
"I..." She was floored. How could he...? Kristen realized that he was right. "I know. I feel like I need you when I have problems, though."
"My girlfriend is really getting frustrated, Kris."
"I'm sorry."
"I'm getting my number changed tomorrow."
"God, Barry! You make it sound like I'm an obsessive freak. You don't have to do that; I get the picture now."
"We've had this same conversation a few times already. You'll never get the picture." Oh, how it hurt to have to put it that frankly.
Barry hung up, not sure if he was doing the right thing. I can't just keep enabling her to be dependant on me. I'm not hers anymore. © 2009 Clarisse NanoitAuthor's Note
