Broken Hearted Soldier

I'm trying to tell a story of a soldier in this poem. Not sure if it worked or not.

There was once a old wives tale of a soldier
A solider who fought wars unlike any others
Felt the pain above all pain
Walked miles in heartache
It was the story of a broken hearted soldier

There was no war nor battle that he could not handle
He was ready for anything to come his way
He had fought and defended this country
And did it proudly
But lost everything while doing so

This soldier, as it was told
Was a brave soldier who went out to battle
Without questioning what might happen
But what most don’t know is of the
Wife he left home, only to never return to

The wife they say
Was carrying their unborn son
While letters back and forth to her brave soldier
Weren’t nearly enough to get her by
She never expected what was going to happen
When she open the door that fateful day

As her beloved soldier laid on his death bed
 He had only one thing on his mind
His last word to his fellow comrades were
“I’ve fought proudly and bravely for this country.
And would do it again if I had the chance.
But please let my wife know that I love her and always will.”

Were the words that his wife heard
When she opened the door, only to see the two soldier’s
Carrying the flag her husband once proudly served under
