Apartment of Shame

Apartment of Shame

A Poem by KatieJean

There were tons of empty pizza boxes leading a trail to where he sat
His eyes were fixated on the Oxi Clean commercial
That blared on the TV in front of him
He wore his old ripped boxers
He was growing quite a beard for not shaving in a week
He hadn’t been out of his apartment for days
The blinds were shut closed
As if trying to hide the shame of his current situation
The bills were piling up and money was getting low
He just couldn’t seem to move himself
From the Friend’s marathon on TBS
He had lost all faith in himself
And he just didn’t feel the same since she walked out that door
He had given her everything and she still choose Bill
The Bill from the Starbucks down on east main

The same Bill who flirted with her as he stood there watching
Maybe he should have stood up and claimed her as his
Maybe he wasn’t what she had hoped he’d be
Maybe, maybe, maybe
That’s one word that could go forever in his mind
He could replay, fast forward, rewind that day she walked out
But no matter how many times he replays it over in his head
No matter how many times he wishes of the things he could have said
She has left and is gone
And there’s no hope that she’ll return to
That apartment of shame.
