Allthings must pass

a poem just as it came

All things must pass.

 

The carefree joys that children know.

They lose touch with as they mature.

Although the process may be slow.

It will happen you can be sure.

 

All things must pass they cannot last.

 

The angst and pain of teenage years

Are something all must undergo

We are beset by formless fears.

Contrary moods which come and go

 

All things must pass they cannot last.

 

We leave our teenage years behind

When we adopt an adult role.

If we are lucky we will find

we are contented on the whole.

 

All things must pass they cannot last.

 

We are content but not complete

To be complete we need a mate.

We have no choice we must compete.

To rectify our single state.

 

All things must pass they cannot last.

 

 

 

 

We fall in love and we get wed

Our lives become quite different

We share our dreams and plan ahead.

We’re young naïve and confident

 

All things must pass they cannot last.

 

The best laid plans can go awry

When fate decides to intervene.

It matters not how hard we try

We utter words we do not mean.

 

All things must pass they cannot last.

 

We can and do apologise

and place the blame on undue stress.

We are prepared to compromise

To regain our happiness

 

All things must pass they cannot last.

 

It’s only then we realise

We control our destiny

That fate can take us by surprise

At any time quite suddenly.

We choose to start a family

but even that depends on chance

Though we succeed eventually

Another change of circumstance

Our last fledgling has flown the nest

A source  of pride as well as pain.

The time has come for us to rest

 and be a couple once again.

The final test is yet to be

When one of us is left alone

To pray for death to set us free

Without a reason to live on

What happens next we do not know

It must remain a mystery.

I like to think we undergo

 A change which lasts eternally.

 

Though most things pass true love will last
