Story poem

Action and reaction.

 

I have seen obscene scenes of war.

Acts of extreme barbarity.

Which will remain for ever more

Burned deep into my memory.

 

Ignoring international law.

The use of wanton cruelty.

Committed by some men in war

Appears to come quite easily.

 

To some few men who enjoy war

Although the vast majority.

Do not agree with killing more

Brutally than the enemy.

 

That is the tragedy of war.

It fosters inhumanity.

Desire to even up the score

By any means apparently.

 

When flashbacks take you back again.

Recalling all too vividly.

The agony and cries of pain.

You can’t erase the memory.

 

Although you would do if you could

It simply isn’t possible.

Because it means you understood.

 War makes cruelty acceptable.
