Stranger than fictionA Poem by poeticpiersstorypoemStranger than fiction. He is not the man he thought he was. He made a chance discovery He’d been adopted legally Into a childless family. He had researched the family tree. Back to the thirteenth century. He felt intensely proud to be. Part of an ancient family. But now he knew it was not true and was uncertain what to do There was no way that he could see. For him to find out easily. The facts he felt that he must know. What happened all those years ago. If he is lucky he might find. A clue in papers left behind.. He chose to search methodically. For evidence he thought must be. Amongst his parents documents. Hidden away by accident. Or probably deliberately. It could be either possibly. He could not rest until he knew. Which made him more determined to. Discover his identity. He had the capability. To search until he found the truth. But he needed concrete proof. He found a birth certificate. Which very clearly seemed to state. That he was illegitimate. But also seemed to indicate. His mother was a Surrogate Who wanted to alleviate. The suffering of a childhood friend And was quite happy to pretend. The child she bore had been born to Her childless friend. Although she knew. His daddy was her friend’s husband. Nobody else would understand. They swore an oath of secrecy. A secret known to only three. Until I solved the mystery. Nobody knows the truth but me. And I am happy just to be The man I always thought I was. A member of the upper class. I knew my mother as my aunt. And she was always close to me. Sophisticated, elegant. Part of our close knit family. I had no reason to suspect Our family was different. I still regard them with respect They hid the truth with good intent.
