Unexplained

Story poem

I sat as though one paralysed

I was completely petrified

I do not what frightened me

There was nothing I could see.

En empty stretch of country road

Lit by the moon which clearly showed

A barbed wire fence on either side

And yet I still felt terrified.

My car cut out quite suddenly.

Completely unexpectedly.

I sat quite still considering

What I could do if anything.

My car won’t start my cell phone’s dead.

But still there’s nothing I can see

Nothing to explain my dread

I see no way of breaking free

I realise quite suddenly

My dashboards lights are glowing green

I seize the opportunity

To very quickly leave the scene

I floor the accelerator

I know I’m driving far too fast

I never been so scared before

I thought each moment was my last

Slowly I came to senses

Reduced my speed considerably

I have seen the consequences

Of driving much too speedily.

I’m driving slow and carefully

As I attempt to understand

Just what it was that frightened me

I can’t dismiss it out of hand.

As I approach the river where.

The rustic wooden bridge should be

I see warning signs every where

It has collapsed apparently

A highway trooper talks to me.

He tells me what I want to know

It happened unexpectedly

No more than half an hour ago.

Although I had been terrified

frustrated by the long delay.

I would have reached the riverside

Just as the ancient bridge gave way.

It might have been sheer happenstance

Though that’s not how it seem to me

I can’t ascribe it to pure chance

I’m certain it was meant to be.

I would have died most probably

Gone with bridge when it gave way.

I think that almost certainly

My life was saved by that delay.

Perhaps my guardian angel knows

It was her way of saving me

She knew the method which she chose

was sure to work effectively.

I’m still alive to tell the tale

 although I very rarely do

Though I have tried to no avail

No one believes my words are true.

I think hunches are whats left over of our natural selves we ve slowely carved into our ideal of what a civilized man should be. We can groom the outside and strucure our minds but theres not much you can do about your gut or the forces that pull at it.

I believe every word. It has happened to me. I like the read very much, however "I do not what frightened me" should have a know in it somewhere and
"I never been so scared before" should start with an I've. Still the read kept me locked inrapyure. Great read.

Late one night with my family in the car (a VW bug) I stopped for a green light. There was no traffic anywhere. The wife said "Why.. as a car went through the red light at a hundred miles an hour. I carried on driving home.
