In praise of older women

In praise of older women

In praise of older women

There is beauty in old age
 which younger girls can’t emulate
As if the lady’s reached the stage
 where she need not dissimulate

She’s not afraid to let you see
the lines that life’s writ on her face.
 Each wrinkle was earned honourably
each laughter line has earned its place

Cosmetics may conceivably
appear to slow the passing years
but only temporarily
before you are reduced to tears

Youthful beauty soon fades away
no matter how hard you may try
by artifice to make it stay.
 In lucky ladies replaced by

A much longer lasting beauty
which shows through from somewhere deep inside
 without a trace of vanity
Though grace and dignity abide.

Old ladies can be beautiful
and often turn a young man’s head.
Although they are quite comfortable
accepting compliments unsaid.

Admiring glances from young men
 who readily appreciate
The beauty of older women
is something youth can’t imitate.

Young women lack maturity
which older ladies can display.
Their youthful insecurity
somehow always gets in the way.

Ah, what a pleasure to read this morning, Poeticpiers. Blesses me beyond words. To be honest, at almost 50 I would not ever go back to those youthful years for the insecurity I felt back then. When 40 hit, or some where around that time, I stopped caring so much what people think and started living. At almost 50 I see through so much and I have only sympathy for those that are in this boat I once traveled in. You really know how to write for women. Thank you for the lift. Beautifully written and articulated. You have captured so much truth here.

Hugs, Carole

Yes we have a elegance that gracefully arrived with age. It's called experience, good experinces makes us sweet, bad ones makes us bitter.

This a lovely write give us praise.

Thank you.

Ah lovely!

I agree completely with Carole...
I don't think I would go back.
I'm in my early 40's and I plan on the next
half of life being the best of it!

Yes, you are a true gentleman!
Yes, indeed.

This was an absolute joy to read...
Thank you!

This was beautiful, really. I feel as though the vanity of the world is ruining humanity, and it's nice to see that someone recognizes that beauty still lies under the flesh. I am young, and I am insecure. I cannot wait for the time when I will feel that confidence you describe so wonderfully. This entire piece was very uplifting, and I'm happy you've shared it with the cafe. My only suggestion is for the following:

Each wrinkle was earned honourably
each laughter line has earned its place

earned appears in both lines, and it just threw me off a bit. I would consider changing one of them to another, suitable term, for the sake of the flow. However, if it was intentional, disregard my comment. The poem is beautiful as-is.

Yes- I am sick of the 12-year old body being worshipped- what about women, real women? Don't men like women anymore? Sometimes I'm afraid that they don't, that this world is going to pedophiles. This is nice to read - I hope I still turn heads when I'm older.

forMARZly yours

I adored this write Ivor, and I know all the other more mature ladies here will
love it also. You'll have them eating out of your hand!! LOL

Written by a true gentleman and so refreshing to read....sometimes words of praise
for the 'older' woman are sadly lacking in this "youth" orientated society today.

Yes, women over a certain age, just keeping getting and better like vintage wine!
Raise your glasses to us all!!

Bravo sir!
