Also ran

 

Why is it men must strive to win

The pleasure lies in taking part,

the simple joy of joining in

To finish last is no great sin.

So why not be an also ran

at least it proves that you can run.

You’re not ashamed to show you can

take part in anything for fun

Somebody must be champion.

Why worry if it is not you

He will be beaten by someone

and lose his place. They always do

Today he may hold pride of place

Tomorrow is another race.

Another excellent poem that also has a musical quality to it. It flows nicely and speaks to something we all should think about and hope we learn when we are young. To try and do your best is important. To win and to lose is important. We learn by both. You write this issue very well in your poem. It touched me. Very very excellent poem.
