Not Good Enough

Not Good Enough

A Poem by John Byrd

The kid who was never picked to play pick-up basketball.

He never felt good enough.

Nothing ever went right for too long.

One turn becoming a 180 degree angle.

Back tracking.

As soon as he feels he’s making progress

Something pushes him back.

The stem without the flowers.

The rain is coming but it just won’t grow properly.

It takes time to develop?

9 months

Way longer than that.

That’s not even the half of it.

Always in high places

But he’s scared of heights.

He doesn’t want to fall off.

They want him to be President.

They want him to be a Scientist.

Glasses and Sweater every day.

He grew up

Only making the height greater.

It used to be a shorter fall.

I don’t know if I can do it….
