Goldie had returned with the drinks and then left.
“Here’s to you.” said the man as he lifted the glass and saluted Mary. “My name is Martin Whipps.”
It appeared Mr. Martin Whipps liked to talk and spent a good deal of the night talking about himself and his business, a family-run printing business towards the city. He assured Mary he was a man with a large house in a respectable area and was qualified with a promising situation. Mary listened politely, urging him onwards with smiles and nods while every so often Goldie would pop her head round the curtain and with a nod from Martin Whipps would replenish the glasses. Mary continued to pay attention as the man spoke and raised her glass each time to her lips as he did and although she knew it was only coloured water, she felt somewhat tight in her head as the night wore on. Martin Whipps seemed to be very capable of holding his drink and the more he talked the more he consumed and the more he consumed so the more romantic and adventurous became his nature, leaning over the table and clasping Mary’s hand in his own. He began to romance her with titbits of poetry, the like of which Mary had never heard before and it so impressed her, even though she found herself giggling without understanding why she did so.
“One more drink against the night’s cold.” said Goldie as she entered the booth once again.
With fresh glasses filled Goldie set them down on the table and slyly winked at Mary before turning and speaking to Martin Whipps in a suggestive voice.
“The room is ready for you, very cosy to be sure.”
Mary began to giggle again, picking up her drink and swallowing it in one downing. Martin Whipps leaned back and searched through his waistcoat pocket and drawing out a half sovereign he tossed it onto the table.
“I enjoyed the company tonight and shall continue to enjoy it even more!” he shouted, lifting his glass and draining it as Mary had done.
He thumped the empty glass back down on the table and smiled somewhat drunkenly at Mary who now had her eyes half closed as if she was trying to regain her senses. Goldie picked up the empty glasses and the half-sovereign, going to the bar and depositing the glasses before giving the half sovereign to Danny, who leaned against the bar. He spoke briefly to Goldie and she nodded before walking back to the booth.
“Come on, dearie. Let’s be getting you upstairs where you can rest.” said Goldie as she helped Mary to her feet.
Mary giggled as she rose unsteadily to her feet. Goldie and Martin Whipps, himself very unsteady, helped her up the stairs and into Goldie’s room where they lay her on the bed.
“Good night to you both.” whispered Goldie.
She gave Martin Whipps a lecherous look as she quietly closed the door on leaving.
Mary woke and turned over on the bed and put a hand to her eyes as the glare of the sun flared through the window. She turned back and lay there trying desperately to remember where she was. Suddenly she ran her hands down her body, realising she was naked with her clothes in an untidy heap on the floor. Rising quickly she rummaged through the clothes until she found her own and dressed. Her mind raced as she tried desperately to remember and then stopped and sat down on the bed as flashes of the night before began to flood into her mind.
The man Martin Whipps!
She focused her mind to remember him. What had happened. She dare not think about it.
“Good morning, Mary.” said Goldie. “Did you sleep well? I hope you’ve finished with the bed because I need some sleep before tonight’s business.”
“What happened to me last night, Goldie? How did I get here, waking up naked? Tell me?” Mary begged. Goldie laughed loudly.
“Goodness me, Mary. Don’t you remember? You took a real shine to Mr. Whipps, you really did and brought him up here to bed with you. That’s what you did! Why are you so surprised? Don’t you remember? And look there on the dressing table, dearie. He’s left you six pennies for giving him such a good time!”
Mary stared at Goldie with horrified eyes. Goldie was laughing and picking up the six copper coins she pushed them into Mary’s hand.
“There’s plenty more where that came from.” said Goldie. “Lot’s more when you get fashioned to it. Danny was really pleased with you and said you can stay working here for as long as you want.”
Mary rose from the bed and ran to the door.
“I have to get home to my children!” she cried.
