Childhood Memories and a Hankie

Childhood Memories and a Hankie

A Poem by Poetic Beauty
"

first poem written about my grandpa since he passed away three years ago

"

I have carried your hankie

In my pocket for days now

When I reach my hand

Inside my coat

I can feel its smooth texture

Memories flood in my mind

Of what seems a different time

Of days digging in the dirt

With a tablespoon

Underneath the swing

That you made for me

Grandma hanging laundry

On the clothesline

And the green grass

Tickling my little toes

Me smiling

As you pruned the roses

Breezy days spent

Out in the schoolyard

Our kites flying high

With the sun kisses

The blue sky

And when the adventure

Was done for the day

You would wash my feet

And gently put on my white socks

As these special memories

Dances across my mind

I smile, then sigh

Oh grandpa

How I wish we had more time

Oh this held deep feeling with the softest of imagery.. Memories we all carry within. Loved ones passing, still here, yet gone from view. You presented this wonderfully... Brought back my own of my grandmother, all my childhood days with her..

Loved this me gal

oooohhh... BEAUTY!!! that was AMAZING!!! the sweetest memories locked away in this... your Gpa would be proud!! Both my Gpas died before I was born so I never got a chance to meet them, but I did know them. I knew them through the pixs and stories my family would tell me, and your poem just brought a smile to my face!! very nice write, thank you for sharing!!

Beautiful memories of days past gone! Very well written. It's amazing how simple things can bring our love ones to mind.

Lovely nostalgia... how often small objects can be full of association for us. I find ties remind me of many things...

Aw...Memories...Something that we cherish when all things are already gone or left behind...It's true that sometimes we wish to spend more days with the one we love when they're gone...A great poem! Thanks for sharing!

In the fifth stanza, did you mean "when" instead of "went"? Childhood memories are so strong and vivid, yet at the same time so patchwork, quilted in our minds to keep the remembrances warm. I think it's important to have memories of family, generations. I think it's special to be able to record them in the way you've done here.

I know the feeling of this poem. Memories do sneak up on me too. The missed people leave us wishing for one more conversation and one more words of love to them. A very good ending to a excellent poem.
