Learning to love me, Who I Am

Learning to love me, Who I Am

A Poem by Callista Howard
"

No race should have their history erase

"
Who am I, I am a person with a soul an individual not yet made whole
A secret hidden and untold one thousand years of slavery and ancestral history
Wiped away and concealed from my brother's, I and the world
I am the descendant of slaves your brutality was engraved on many of my ancestral graves
I am the one you call the lost generation, I was meant to be a King in this generation
But our oppressors rearranged and changed our history
In order to keep us in captivity gain wealth and earthly inheritance
Mineral resources, diamond and gold
Yes you heard me,
African leaders and merchants, business men and the western world
Traded my people for diamond, myrrh and gold
Not one of you had considered my ancestral souls
Who am I, I am an individual of awesome colour
I am worth more than diamond and gold there's so much more too me
In history my ancestors are known for being great their are not just slaves
My people are a unique race they had chosen to conquer adversaries
Face abuse and live to tell the tale
Who am I, I am the boy, the girl you pretend so often not to see
I am the man, woman and child of colour
Our ancestral bone structure is like no other
We are the nation you all hate
The race you cannot tolerate all because of our colour
Who am I, I am the child of a slave
Who you once and still choose to abuse and use
Suppress and oppress because we are people of colour
Who am I, who are you we are the sons and daughters of the slaves
That were driven out from their Mother land to travel the seas
To be thrown overboard and die of deadly diseases
All because of one man’s greed
Your visions and dreams caused the death of many
Our blood is upon your hands
We like you were created for good but you chose to steal and kill to satisfy your own greed
You ensured we suffered and bleed
Who are we, we are the voices that calls out beyond the graves
The Son's and daughter's who wants to know, Who we are,
Who am I, I am the next generation-the Phoenix rising from the ashes
Awakening from sleep to discover and know, Who I am.
