The ThingA Poem by Madeleine CelesteIt's another love poem. Are you surprised? Are you disappointed? Also when I say 'him' just know I'm talking about Matthew because when isn't that happening hahah I try so hard
I tried to make a list once
About everything that reminded me of love And in my efforts I put a single thing on that list. Laughing with someone and feeling, just a moment, purely content, before dissolving into laughter That was the thing. That was love. I stored the list away And forgot about it Creating my own definition of love Not remembering the thing Suddenly it's January and I'm doing a 7th grader's math homework Sitting on the auditorium stairs A step below him Exchanging stories in hushed voices Except it's me, pencil in hand Gazing up at him telling his story Completely and utterly enraptured And yes, the story's interesting too "And she docked me, like, twenty points-" And by this point your hand is over your face and you're trying to hard to keep quiet I have to laugh, and I do And for a brief moment I open my eyes and I see you Laughing And the realization strikes Here on the stairs Algebra in my lap Pencil in my hand Shaking with laughter Watching you cracking up This is the thing.
