A Foolish Thing

A Foolish Thing

A Poem by Tyler James Mathieson
"

Assorted thoughts on hope

"

What is believing in things we cannot see?

What is saying, “Things will get better.”

When we really don’t know.

Hope is a foolish thing

The smart choice is the right choice

Most of the time

What makes us chase the wind?

Hope is irresponsible

The future is unknown

Why do we seek the sun

When we can only lose our sight

Hope is blind

Why do we open ourselves

Only to be crushed

By the weight of our expectations

Hope is fragile

Hope hurts

Hope steals

Hope is for fools

Hope is

Hope is the only thing worth having

Hope is the reason to get up and say

“Maybe today will be better”

Because maybe

Today really will be better

Hope is the reason

To lift the things that seem

Too big for us to carry

Hope is the reason

That we can look to the sky

And say that maybe we will

Build the wings that will

Carry us over that horizon

Hope is the reason to chase the wind

Hope may be for fools

But a fool I will gladly be if

I can become a fool that can fly
