It's Been Decades

Martha

 

He’s not in school.

 

            He

                        just

                                    doesn’t

           show

                       up.

 

            I almost thought he

            passed me without

            my noticing, but

            he didn’t.

           

            I compel the secretary

to give me his address.

 

            I go to his house.

            I watch his mother.

            He’s not home.

            I go toSiena’s mother’s house.

            I

                        am

                                    furious.

 

           

 

 

 

He is there.

I see him kiss her mother.

It hurts,

            my heart,

                        her heart.

A tear falls down my cheek.

            I go inside.

           

They separate immediately.

I’m repulsed.

            The mother says,

           Siena, honey, what are you doing here?

I push her away when

she attempts to hug me.

            I say,

           It’s Martha, now.

Her mother appears confused,

            but Kevin knows.

           My dear Kevin, have you missed me?

           It’s been a few decades, hasn’t it?
