Roman Dover

Roman Dover

A Poem by PJ

High is the vantage point upon
This ancient seat of chalk,
Where maybe once a Roman sentry
From the Pharos did walk.
Tough the leather that trod the World
Now burdens English clover,
Homeward thoughts of the Tyrrhenian
Across the Straits of Dover.

Where maybe once the galley ships brought,
Legions to disembark,
Stands inland now the 'Roman Quai'
And modern chariots park.
So we live in this shadow born
Of a mighty forces retreat,
And around a tribune's Painted Wall
Tread twentieth century feet.
