Chapter 9- Return to the Dungeon

A week passed since Julie and I started teaming up to go into the dungeon daily.

She'd slowly been leveling up as we progressed deeper in the dungeon. By now she was at level 36. I on the other hand remained at level 125. Nothing in this dungeon so far posed much threat to me. I'd step in if Julie was in trouble, otherwise I'd stand back and watch her fight.

Today we were up against stone golems. They have high resistances and high attack, but moved slower than most monsters. There were three total, all nearly double our height with a red core for an eye. Julie was fighting two of them, one at level 33 and the other at level 37. I was facing the third alone, it was at level 44.

No matter how many times I slashed at it with my kunai, the golem's HP hardly decreased. Still though it was unable to hit me by swinging its fist around. I tried throwing my kunai at the golem's red core, but it blocked the strike with an arm.

If I could use my wings I'd be able to fly above it and hit the core. Unfortunately I've kept my Humanification skill turned on whoever I'm with Julie. It's best she doesn't find out who I truly am.

Throwing a flameball at the golem has no effect. Using lightning on it brings down the golem's HP more than hitting it with my kunai, but not by a significant amount.

All this running around is starting to make me exhausted. My SP must be decreasing swiftly. I need to think of some way to harm the golem before I run out of Stamina.

Glancing over at Julie I see she's using wind magic to no avail. The damage done is insignificant at best.

"Damn it."

Fed up with the outcome Julie jumps back from the golems. With how slow they move she'll have time to think of a strategy before they catch up.

Or at least that's what I assumed, but the golden started shooting rocks out of their bodies as projectiles. Julie was knocked down from the unexpected impact.

When I looked back at the golem I was facing I saw that it had used magic as well. A massive boulder was held up over its head. It proceeded to throw this boulder at me.

Without thinking I reached into my inventory on impulse and pulled out the Holy Sword of Light, having learned the compatible magic necessary to properly wield the sword. I slash the boulder in half. With the momentum I slash at the golem's body. Its stone body breaks apart, the upper half of the body falling off from the legs..

I glance at Julie again. Good, she wasn't paying attention to me. Instead she was focusing on dodging more stone projectiles. I return the sword to my inventory.

The golem I cut in half was continuously losing HP, but when I looked again I saw the HP number go up. it began to regenerate, taking in the rocky walls of the dungeon to rebuild its body.

"Oh no you don't."

What magic should I use? This golem is going to rebuild itself if I don't hurry and figure out what weakness it might have.

I glanced back at the golem and noticed the red core that was on its head. I felt like slapping my forehead. It was so simple, why didn't I realize it sooner? I was overthrowing this.

I threw my kunai, piercing the core. The golem's body crumbled away. Its HP dropped instantly to 0.

I looked back at Julie. She was still struggling against the golem she was fighting. Her SP was lower than mine, exhaustion was setting in faster for her.

I threw my chain around one of the golems, pulling it down to the ground. The golem was heavy, it required much effort on my part to pull it down. For a moment I didn't think I'd be able to, but at such a higher level my stats allowed me the strength I needed.

"Aim for the core!"

"What do you think I've been trying to do!"

Julie pulled out a saber from her inventory. The blade glowed yellow and pale green. She ran toward the downed golem and plunged the saber in its core. To keep the other golem distracted She shot out consecutive concentrated blasts of light magic.

When the golem she stabbed crumbled away I pulled my chain back. Julie ran at the last golem. In a last ditch effort the golem used magic to craft a boulder projectile. Even though the boulder was massive and would deal plenty of damage it was launched in a straight line. Julie ducked and rolled out of the way, cutting at the golem's legs with her saber.

As expected the golem's body did not break, but it still lost HP. When the golem looked down at Julie with an arm pulled back to whack her she shot off more blasts of light magic. The golem was too slow to shield itself and its core was damaged. It tumbled backward, falling on its back.

She climbed on top of it and plunged the saber in its core, destroying it. Like the others once its core was gone the golem crumbled away.

"That was an excellent job."

I walk over to her as she gets back up on her feet. She's breathing heavy, her SP must be really low. Although, I can't say I don't dislike her looking like this. It makes me imagine… No! Stop thinking like that already!

I shake my head and slap my cheeks to drive away those thoughts.

"Are you okay, Elsa?"

"Huh? Yeah. I'm fine. You should probably take an SP potion."

"I'm all out."

Good God, I don't know how I'll be able to get through this.

"These golems were tough, but beating them was easy once you figured it out. It's all about speed and close ranged attacks." She returns her Elemental Saber to her inventory as she speaks.

"That's the first time I've seen you use a weapon."

"I prefer casting magic. I just grabbed the first thing that came to mind."

Same, I accidently pulled out a Legendary-Tier weapon in my haste and frustration. If she would've seen me with that sword I don't know how I'd explain it. There's only one copy of that sword in the whole game and the Hero is supposed to have it. I could try to say it's a replica, but if she ever had a chance to check the sword's stats she'd know I was lying.

"Do you want to keep going a little farther today?" Julie asked me.

"Yeah. Just a bit more."

We continue our trek in the dungeon. I don't know if she notices, but on the dungeon walls were a set of eyes watching us. There are level 100 spiders watching and following us.

I don't think Julie noticed. These spiders are using dark magic to move without making any noise. I probably only noticed because at my higher level their presence is easier to pick up. The spiders, which are around a dozen, spread out around us. They seem to be scouts as they've been following us for the last 5 days without taking any other action. I'm sure a dungeon boss summoned or tamed them. They're thralls and most likely working for an intelligent NPC.

Whenever I notice the spiders it sends a chill down my spine. For starters I don't like the feeling of having 96 eyes watching me every moment. I'm just glad they're normal sized house spiders and not giant monsters otherwise I wouldn't be able to concentrate at all. The spiders give me the creeps, I hope someone else gets to their master before me. That's one boss I won't want to fight, they'll probably be some half human half spider abomination. I don't even want to think about that!

"Hey look!"

Julie pulled on my arm, drawing my attention. She pointed down a passageway. There were two adventurers fighting a couple goblins.

Both were men. One was a black haired glasses wearing young man in a green cloak. He cowered and hid behind a pile of rocks. The other was a man with brown hair, he wore outdoors combat gear and carried an ax which he used to slice into the bodies of the scrawny goblins.

"We should head down a different passage, Julie."

I advised this because I didn't want to have to deal with other adventurers. At this point in the dungeon the passages branched off into multiple directions, it quickly became a complex labyrinth of tunnels.

The ax weirder decapitated the head of the last remaining goblin. His way of fighting was very bloody. Blood coated the man's weapon and body. The dungeon was stained red and the bodies had massive gash wounds where blood poured from. The decapitated goblin's body wobbled around for a bit, blood gushed like a geyser from the wound when it happened. After losing all its HP the body tumbled over and joined the pile of goblin corpses.

Julie covered her mouth. I knew she wanted to vomit, but she was doing a surprisingly good job at holding it in. It's not like she hasn't seen violence in the game before, but this wasn't just violence. It was carnage. Those goblins could've been dispatched in less brutal ways, he wanted to make a mess out of killing them.

I stepped in front of Julie as the ax weirder turned to face us. The other adventurer walked out to stand by his side.

He pointed his ax at me. "The name's Grady. Now who the f**k are you? I don't like that face you've got, so if you're a necromancer or half dragon we're going to have a problem."
