The Last Selkie of Salt Sea

The Last Selkie of Salt Sea

“The Last Selkie of Salt Sea”

I am the last selkie
Who swims the salt sea
For the rest of my kindred
Have all vanished but me

Our songs used to carry
Between Greenland and Wales
And the shores of the New World
All were known to our tales

We would put on our seal’s skins
We would bask in the sun
We would dart through the cold north
We would sing and have fun

But then something happened
The world started to change
But then something happened
The world was no longer the same

The waters grew warmer
The ice started to melt
The base men who could not shift
Garbed themselves in our pelts

On the rocks and the sea spray
Do I sing my sad song
For I swam through the black tide
Now my time is not long

I am the last selkie
Who swims the salt sea
For the rest of my kindred
Have all vanished but me
