“Gave Up Your Ghost”

Then -

I had been afeared you

Would give up your ghost,

Disappear out into

Those wild roads where

Only cats like you can go –

The roads that twist and

Intersect the waking realm.

You know that’s why their

Eyes gleam, don’t you?

They see the things we can’t

Underneath the moonlight,

Is that why I never found you?

Now -

That shape is just a towel laying

Discarded in the hallway

Right were you used to,

That sound is just the wind

Creaking this old house,

Not your ghostly footpads

Nor the opening of the door

Or that familiar impression

At the foot of my bed that

I think must surely be you

Returning but I open my eyes and

You give up your ghost.
