To the Greenwood SideA Poem by Scott H.Based on an old English folksong and a desire to escape from this world
“To The Greenwood Side”
I want to go to the greenwood side
But I cannot find the way –
The stones are silent to my touch,
Will not respond to what I say.
I want to run to the greenwood side
I search the trees by deep of night –
But the trods won’t open ‘neath my feet,
Remain out of my sight.
Can they not see I belong with them
In their land where fancies rule –
For if I go to the greenwood side
I won’t be seen as such a fool.
I do not care if there be monsters there
I have fought some in my time -
They cannot be any fiercer beasts
Than the ones that plague my mind.
So I want to go to the greenwood side
Beyond the cairns and stones and fens -
For once I enter those verdant lands
I will ne’er be seen again.
I’ll gladly go to the greenwood side
Be it cruel or fair or kind –
With no second thoughts nor parting glance
At the world I’d leave behind.
