"Dreams About Flying"

Dreams about flying

Are my favorite kinds,

Not via airplane or spaceship

But self-propelled,

Birdlike in my splendor

Amidst the kingdom of the sun,

Arms outstretched in ecstasy

With fingertips brushing the clouds,

Twisting columns of cumulus

Risign all around me,

Guiding me on my way as

The wind ruffles my hair,

Whispering its encouragement

Above the chronic jubilation

Of my laughter.

This is how my soul was

Surely born to be,

Carefree and soaring high

Across the never-ending blue,

Free from the earthly restraints

That so encumber me

Upon that inevitable waking,

When my no-longer-eagle's eyes open,

My feet touch the cold ground and

The dream-magic dissipates,

Leaving me earthbound

Until night once more descends,

Returning me most mercifully

To my Elysian skies in

Dreams about flying.

I can imagine that the Wright Brothers had the same dream to sail the skies so freely. You made flying seem almost spiritual, like this flight began within your soul and moved to the air above everyone. I think the ending is good also reminded me of a soft landing after a great adventure. What a wonderful dream this is.
