The Girls of My Wilder Days

The Girls of My Wilder Days

A Poem by Scott H.
"

I used to have some wild times with my chickie-girls, all of whom have gone on to their lives now.

"

"The Girls of My Wilder Days"

The girls of my wilder days

Have left me now,

Retreating to the cloistered walls and

Marital obligations of their lives,

Scattering themselves haphazardly

Like drops of fluid mercury

Poured out across the country,

Leaving me with an emptiness

That cannot be easily filled

By lingering wisps of smoke and

The faint echoes of their laughter

As they ripple through my memory.

On days such as this I wish

That they were still with me,

Hearts filled with exuberance and

Noses filled with powder,

Drunk and jumping in puddles -

Wandering London in leather and awe -

Giggling on the living room sofa with

A rapidly-diminishing case of beer

Being matched to Dazed & Confused -

Simply driving down the interstate,

Getting high and listening to music,

Destination lost in importance to

The fun of the journeying there.

I would love to run once more with

The girls of my wilder days,

They would rejuvenate my heart and

Entice my soul to sing again -

But even now that bridges

Have been spanned with

Fiber-optic cable lines and keystrokes

It isn't the same.
