The Lake

Writing prompt: "Point of View/description of lake from someone who just commited murder..."

Taylor was right the water was glistening with an airy peaceful flow. David sunk further into himself as he watched the water lap up on to the shore. It was reaching out to him for mercy. He just pulled his feet closer and crinkled his face in disgust. The water out further on the lake was quieter and it wasn’t pleading for him. The water lay there perfectly still while the geese floated on top speaking in their foreign dialect. To him they sounded like screaming sirens coming closer and closer before fading away.

The murky shore mud squished between his fisted hands and he just kept choking it. Over and over it made that fleshy saliva sound that he used to make as a child when he would suck in his left cheek between his teeth and suck on it. He tried to do it while staring at the lake but he could no longer move his mouth. Frightened by this, he tried to pull himself out of the mud but his body would not move. He felt held down by something bigger than him like he was the one being strangled.

Even if he did get up to leave where would he go? No one would believe that she just ran away. No one would believe he was innocent. He was a bad man and everybody knew it. She was stupid though, a waste for even trusting him. What was she thinking walking out in the woods with a man she only knew for three weeks?  No it wasn’t her fault. She couldn’t have known and he was good at hiding things one more thing wouldn’t hurt.
