Six Feet farther down than Me.

Six Feet farther down than Me.

A Poem by Megan Harris

I have stepped away from you countless times
Counting cars and crows that flew by
But we walked together all this time
We made tracks in snow, our feet in time
But I walked off and got myself lost
Now that I've turned around and found indents
of moments we had never really spent
Let them slip, thinking we had plenty of time
On the phone we'd make conversation
About somedays and not-never-agains
That somehow became promises that
You had no choice but not to keep.
I remember you played me that song,
I hear you hum from somewhere
As I wander along, alone and cold -
I trace your footsteps like piano keys
With the thought that -
I'll never again feel those fingers on me.
