Obituary

A Poem by Robert Erickson
"

sad sad sad

"

Love hurts, I know this for sure.
That this is just another rotten obituary
of the heart is well established.
It is all Another dream shattered by the makeshift reality we call home.

Love hurts. It bites, it stings.
It's the sweetest pain any one of us will ever know.
The smart ones avoid it, they run from it,
Kill it, control it, and disembowel it.
They take the power of love out of love's hands
and remove it, castrate it, destroy it.

They are smart despite being damaged somehow.
The rest of us who toil and like a moth to flame
become consumed by love and distinguished
are weak creatures consumed by the desire for love.

Sometimes it is right when we get what we always wanted
that love leaves its deepest bruise.
For despite what I feel, despite what I say
I still know she is slipping and drifting away.
There is nothing I can do to bring her back to me.

But that's alright, it's okay.
I'll live to love another day
and if I'm lucky my bruised heart won't show.
Next time "she" won't know that I'm damaged goods.

So remember this, if you remember anything:
Live, Love, Learn, Die.

Live because you have no choice.
You are just a fat rat in a maze chasing the cheese.
The cheese is love, it's tasty but definitely bad for you,
High in death, High in fat, and High in death.
Learn to hide your true feelings
because in the end they don't matter
and nobody gives a rat's a*s about your bullshit.
Die, because you have no choice
and if you are lucky you won't feel the pain anymore.

Yeah, here and now we decay.
Despite what I say
I still feel her slipping, drifting away.
I can't make her come back to me.

Oh well.
And so the same sad story goes
my obituary unfolds.

This is beautiful. I love how you deal with the themes of life and death and liken it to a race. Kind of makes you wonder about the reason for our existence, doesn't it? Also, I love the emotions you conveyed instead of told - the anger, the frustration, the helplessness, and of course, the sorrow.

However, it got a little preachy at some points, eg:
'So remember this, if you remember anything:
Live, Love, Learn, Die.'

But all in all, this is a commendable effort. Thanks for sharing!

Love,
Raven

Full of hurt. Bursting with pain. Raw. And powerful. Thanks for sharing.

This is just some super emotional ranting that took place through a connection of my finger tips and my brain. It is meant to be me talking to myself in some regard, reassuring myself with extreme cynicism if you will.
