When they come back...

When they come back...

A Poem by Picture of Poetry
"

A poem for all of the soliers who fought in WWII...

"

After the war,

when they come back,

at first they will look happy,

as if their herats were overflowing

with the grave emotion of joy.

They, the next day,

they are all different.

Their once, beautiful golden eyes;

two black lifeless buttons.

They don't smile as mcuh,

and they hardly ever talk.

Nobody knows why,

unless you have been

through everything that

they have been through.

They have been in a war zone

filled with hate, death, and dispair.

The air, over there, so foul;

so deadly; full of so many different

poisons.

Poison from a bomb, gas, or just

the smell of dead, bloody, bodies,

lying everywhere.

Nice, clear ground is

no where to be found.

Bodies, now lying in a city, that now,

look like a cemetery.

The sounds of guns firing

and of people screaming

floods the air.

So when they come back,

their minds will be clouded with

the horror of war.

For some,

the war will stay with them,

and never go away;

like a sickness with no cure.

The war is a nightmare,

that haunts their dreams every night

when they go to sleep.

But for others,

the "lucky ones",

the war will leave them

and they will live

what is left of their life.

So, when they come back,

they will never be the same,

no matter what you do, or

what you say.

They will be different,

because they just got back

from a hell zone that they

were just fighting in.

This war in now a scar

on them all.

So, just remember all

of this,

when they come back.

Hi again.^^; This poem is fantastic, and does a great job at capturing the horrors of war and the after effects that soldiers had to deal with. It doesn't attempt to glorify war, but merely states the horror outright. Great job, I loved the description of the soldiers' eyes, that was really lovely! Great job. (:

i thought it was a decent poem. personally i don't think veterans can just put the war behind them-so to speak. i think, and from what ive seen and heard (which granted is not a lot) war compltely alters you. people see things that they never expected and it scars them. even if i never saw anything horrid and bloody, i think i'd still react psychologically to the violence, anger, fear, and pain in the air. but i like how you presented this idea, soldiers coming home from war and how they might feel, its different than taking on the first person point of view and trying to express what the veteran was feeling which is what i might have done. i'm just being honest here, you're still an amazing writer to me, i just think i expected more. idk maybe i'm just too demanding of people. sorry if i'm being overly honest.

pretty good, a unique style and sense of imagery, very powerful and moving story.
doesn't glorify the war as Sarah says (which is a bit redundant, why would it?) and focuses on the harsh reality of warfare and bloodshed. great work.

this is an excellent awareness piece. Puts into perspective what many don't realize.. is heartfelt, and creative. To write on topics such as ones we only feel stronlgy about, and have never gone through it it takes a certian amount of being able to see through their eyes, or tr ying to.. and i think you did a good job. well done poet

you should be proud. :)

much love n respect
