Little Lights

Very short.

If you commit to this, you will only worsen the punishment.

With the artificial confidence she has built to save her from her steeping self esteem, she finds the will to rotate the key. "Self control... That's all it will take." It has long since been a habit of hers to speak to herself aloud. She is her own. She is the companion that she will never surrender. For without her own ears, to what will the sound of her feelings propagate to? That made plenty of sense to her. Although she knew how much her companion could bother her at times, it still, somehow, made sense. Her excuse was sanity. But how can it be confirmed by man that she is sane, if when witnessed behind shadows, she is always speaking (loudly) to nothing?

This will not fix anything. It's a silly idea.

Now, locked within a fairly sized wooden room with a tight balcony, she sits on her thin-sheeted bed located next to and perpendicular to the door. That way when she would lay down to fall asleep, she would have the stars, and only the stars to gaze upon before she dozed off. Sometimes she would wake to find her heavy binoculars sitting on her nose and lips. She'd always wished she were able to watch the moon whilst falling asleep. But she can only see that from the balcony. Now it's 5.37pm and the darkness is around 3 hours away.

Nothing will save you if you go down this path. Even your favourite constellations.

"Don't say that..." She whispered with sadness, "Cepheus can save me... He's always saved me. either case, I have my books." Ahh Cepheus. The man of her dreams, drawn across the night sky with flaring dots. If one were to connect those dots they would form the shape of a triangular-shaped-roof house. That is the house she visits sometimes, where she keeps her secrets.

He failed to save his daughter. Eventually he'll fail to save you.

"I'm not as beautiful as his daughter. As long as there will be no one to demand me from his home or his heart, he will not fail to save me. Don't argue with me when in terms of mythology. And specially when in terms of the stars." She said sternly.

Suit yourself. But know that that with this amount of food, you won't survive longer than 2 weeks.

She stood to watch her food. At the end of her bed lay a low wooden table. Atop that is a plastic plate of two apples, two clementines, three cucumbers, and four baby carrots. Besides the plate was a large and heavy jug of clean water. "Well that's good news then. I do not plan on pursuing this for longer than a week anyhow."

With what will you entertain yourself with?

"In the day, I will have my books. My cities, and countries, and planets worth of words in which it will be my privilege to donate my time to. What better way has anyone to spend their time but with the company of ancient books. The great words of genius mathematicians, philosophers, or even novelists who, without their knowledge, have written their works with affectionate value. Not sentimental, but affectionate!"

And what exactly have you against sentimentality?

"Sentimentality is a lie. Don't have me get into a complicated subject like this."

Alright then, what about in the night?

"You make it seem as though we've never met." She lightened her voice and smiled as she sauntered to the balcony as if walking in the dark. "In the night, I shall meet with Cepheus and his wife Cassiopeia, I have also a rendezvous with my sweet bird Cygnus. And if I have time I'll plot Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, as they do take quiet some time to recognise. On special occasions I'll certainly visit the others..." Now she had her head resting on the walls of the balcony as she stared of into the foggy distance, "how I just love it up there..."
